In September, the fifth, anniversary exhibition “PROrestoration. Import substitution in restoration materials and technologies” was held in Moscow. The Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering presented an interactive platform at the exhibition dedicated to architectural heritage and the training of specialists for the restoration industry.
For four days, professors and students of the Department of Architectural and Urban Heritage at SPbGASU introduced visitors to the profession of restorer and the opportunities of specialized education. According to the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage, about 30 thousand people visited the exhibition. Among the participants were restoration companies, material manufacturers, design organizations, museums, and educational institutions.
For the interactive platform, the university prepared a series of master classes: “Architectural Puzzles,” “Detective on Defects,” “Iconographic Research with Coloristic Solution Selection,” the game “Restoration MEMO,” and the computer game “Restoration Terms and Elements Platformer.” The practical tasks allowed visitors to become familiar with architectural elements and nuances in restoration, features of studying historical images, and professional terminology in language accessible not only to professionals.
Our teachers and students communicated with visitors of various ages – from schoolchildren who are just choosing their future profession to professionals in the restoration industry. They talked about the training of restorers, the knowledge required for this work, and the competencies gained while studying at SPbGASU at all levels of education: from preparatory courses to professional retraining and postgraduate studies.
The university paid special attention to a significant innovation: starting this year, in addition to the well-established training of restoration architects that has been going on for many years, training in the specialty of “restoration engineer” has begun. This program complements the traditional architectural training of engineers and is focused on solving engineering problems related to the preservation of buildings and structures.
