Members of the capital’s student squads undergo counselor training and pass on knowledge to the younger ones. Schoolchildren, in turn, can join a work squad and gain their first work experience.
“In the student brigades of Moscow, mentorship is not a formality but a living exchange of experience. Participants pass on knowledge to novice educators, and schoolchildren take their first steps in the profession,” noted Margarita Savinkina, project manager of “Youth of Moscow“.
Apply knowledge and train newcomers
A year after joining the team, the participant is already ready to educate and train others, applying the knowledge gained about the profession. The youngsters go through the journey from novice to mentor — thus ensuring continuity and the transmission of the community’s values.
The next stage is leading the team. The leader defines development and goals, ensures the completion of work tasks, leads the way, and becomes an authority for teammates. At this point, they pass on life experience to newcomers and help them grow as professionals. In this regard, mentors in student teams are not only participants in educational fields but also anyone who is not afraid to take responsibility and is ready to lead the team.
“A teacher not only imparts knowledge. Very often, they are the first to notice a child’s abilities, support them, help them not to give up what they’ve started, and believe that everything will work out. This is especially evident in teenage work squads: for a schoolchild, the first job is always a new and challenging experience, and there must be someone nearby who can help figure things out, give advice, and teach not to fear responsibility. The same happens in pedagogical squads,” noted Yulia Drozhzhina, Chairwoman of the Board of Russian Student Squads and Moscow Student Squads.
Gain work experience and learn responsibility
Students from the age of 14 can join labor brigades. Here they gain experience, learn responsibility, and teamwork skills. After completing specialized training, teenagers get their first job at railway stations, hotels, and children’s camps. Even from school, young people can try out a profession. Each brigade is assigned an experienced mentor from the adult members of the movement. He helps students find jobs, complete specialized courses, and organize the brigade’s activities.
Tigran Epremyan, head of the Moscow teenage labor squads department, said that squad mentors differ from teachers. A mentor allows for mistakes, but at the same time is always nearby, helps make decisions, and creates conditions for their charges to learn independently.
Give smiles to children
Participants of pedagogical teams undergo counselor practice in children’s camps during the summer period. They take on responsibility, organize activities for large groups, and work individually with each child. Students become elder comrades for the younger generation—those who teach how to distinguish good from evil and explain how to act correctly and be honest.
This year, young educators worked with children in camps in the Moscow region and the Nizhny Novgorod region. The health camp “Bugorok” in the Domodedovo urban district of the Moscow region had a record number of student counselors (79 people).
In addition, participants of the All-Russian patriotic campaign “Snow Landing of RSO” become mentors for the children and for each other. They conduct charitable and volunteer activities in schools, hospitals, and orphanages, such as workshops, career guidance sessions, and sports events. Such work helps each child feel that there are people nearby who are ready to teach, support, and show the way.
