Speaking to the press in Islamabad, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted Pakistan’s crucial role in international diplomacy, including efforts to resolve the conflict between the US and Iran.

The Secretary General, in particular, emphasized the importance of signing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding dated June 17, which led to a temporary ceasefire.
“From Islamabad, I want to clearly and unequivocally tell all parties: put an end to the conflict. Return to diplomacy. Fully restore the rights and freedoms related to navigation in accordance with international law,” Guterres repeated his call.
During his visit to Pakistan, the UN head was awarded one of the country’s highest state honors – the Nishan-e-Imtiaz order – in recognition of his contributions to strengthening relations between Pakistan and the UN and efforts to maintain peace in the region.
Pakistan’s work in the Security Council
Guterres recalled Pakistan’s work as a member of the UN Security Council during 2025–2026 and the country’s participation in peacekeeping activities. More than 180 Pakistanis have lost their lives during peacekeeping missions around the world.
“I am especially grateful to Pakistan for, together with Denmark, initiating Security Council Resolution 2823, which strengthens accountability for crimes against UN peacekeepers. This resolution was co-sponsored by 153 countries,” said the UN chief.
“This is the largest number of co-sponsors of a Security Council resolution in the entire history of the UN,” he added.
Efforts to combat climate change
Guterres also reminded about the 2022 floods in Pakistan, which caused widespread destruction and the deaths of hundreds of people.
“Pakistan is on the frontline of climate chaos despite its negligible contribution to global emissions,” said the Secretary-General. He welcomed the response measures being taken by the country’s leadership, including the transition to environmentally clean energy sources.
