The third “School of Urban Economics” has concluded in the capital. It is held annually by the city’s economic policy complex based at various universities. This year, the partner was the Faculty of Economics at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). The program was dedicated to the analysis of urban data.
“Urbanization is the foundation of the development of the global economy: a large portion of the labor resources is concentrated in cities, and over 80 percent of the global gross domestic product is generated there, while the share of the urban population is constantly increasing. This trend is relevant to our country as well. Under current conditions, Russian megacities need specialists in urban economic management with strong practical and analytical foundations. However, a full-fledged program for training urban economists is offered by a limited number of Russian universities. The ‘School of Urban Economics’ is an important step in training such specialists, who will be in demand not only in the capital but also in other cities of our country,” she said
Maria Bagreeva, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, head of the city’s Department of Economic Policy and Development.
The instructors of the “Urban Economy School” were practitioner experts and representatives of the academic community. Lectures and master classes were conducted by heads and specialists of Moscow’s analytical center and the metropolitan economic policy complex, the Faculty of Economics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, as well as invited experts in the field of urban economy and representatives of the analytical portal “SberIndex.”
Maria Bagreeva added that the relevance of the topic choice is confirmed by the steadily growing interest of students in the project. This year, more than 750 applications were submitted to participate in the “School of Urban Economics” — three times more than in 2025. As a result of the competitive selection, 150 students from leading universities not only in the capital but also from other cities took part: Lomonosov Moscow State University, National Research University “Higher School of Economics,” Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, New Economic School, Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, Saint Petersburg State University, Ural Federal University, and others.
During the three-day intensive course, students progressed from theory to practice. Participants immersed themselves in working with current metropolitan data and in solving practical urban development tasks. During the first two days, they studied various methods of information analysis and principles of decision-making based on that information in the city. The ‘School of Urban Economics’ concluded with a case championship: students formed an analytical center and addressed real problems related to assessing economic and budgetary effects, business migration, and its commercial activity. The winners received priority rights for internships in Moscow’s economic policy complex.
“The Faculty of Economics at Moscow State University has been cooperating with the Moscow economic policy complex for many years, and the ‘School of Urban Economics’ is another step in this partnership. It is very beneficial for students to see how economic theory turns into real solutions, as well as to work with current data from the capital and understand how the economy of a megacity is structured. We are pleased that this platform unites science and practice based specifically at MSU,” said Aleksandr Maltsev, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics at M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University.
