On October 4, a special program dedicated to World Architecture Day will take place at the Moscow Transport Museum. The main figure will be the author of the building where the permanent exhibition is located — architect Konstantin Melnikov. Visitors can attend drawing master classes, where they will create thematic sketches, as well as watch a documentary film. The events will be held at: Novoryazanskaya Street, building 27.
“The garage for trucks on Novoryazanskaya Street is a unique monument of Soviet avant-garde. It was built in 1926–1929 based on the project of the outstanding architect Konstantin Melnikov. By order of Sergey Sobyanin, the building has been restored and adapted for the permanent exhibition of the Moscow Transport Museum. In honor of World Architecture Day, we have organized a special educational program for the whole family, which will introduce visitors to the features of the profession and how it influences the appearance of the city,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for transport and industry.
In Moscow, Konstantin Melnikov created dozens of daring projects: workers’ clubs, the famous cylindrical house-workshop in Krivoi Arbat lane, and a series of garages with innovative layouts, among which is the building on Novoryazanskaya street.
This garage was originally designed as a complex engineering and artistic structure. The architect successfully addressed the challenge related to the organization of movement of hundreds of trucks. He fitted the building with an arc-shaped layout into a tight triangular plot of land and freed the interior from unnecessary internal supports. Today, it houses a permanent exhibition of the Moscow Transport Museum.
“Konstantin Melnikov said that the profession of an architect is to ‘turn delicate dreams into powerful reality.’ It seems to me that this perfectly describes the appearance, character, and essence of the garage on Novoryazanskaya Street: a bold idea embodied with grace and unwavering rationality. For us, Konstantin Melnikov is not only a great architect and the author of the building in which the Moscow Transport Museum operates today. His attitude toward space, his ability to think as broadly as possible and seek solutions that previously did not exist have become part of our museum’s DNA. Like Konstantin Melnikov, we want to be innovators, which means we want to continue asking ourselves questions for which there is not yet an answer. World Architecture Day is a special holiday for us, giving us an opportunity to look at the place where we work in a new way and remember that architecture always begins with an idea and a question: what if we did it differently? In the museum, we want to maintain this vector — to explore, imagine, and be visionaries,” said Oksana Bondarenko, director of the Moscow Transport Museum.
From 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, the art studio “Architecture of Movement” session will take place for participants over six years old. Their main source of inspiration will be the works of Konstantin Melnikov, including his buildings in Moscow. Under the guidance of the instructor, visitors will create their own studies using the color palette of the capital’s avant-garde architecture. The drawings will be dedicated to the garage on Novoryazanskaya Street, built in 1926–1929. Tickets can be purchased at on the site.
From 14:30 to 15:30, the “City in Motion” art studio will hold a master class for participants over six years old. They will learn about various types of buses and trolleybuses from the museum’s collection that have been running through the capital’s streets for decades. Among them are the legendary ZIS-155, which became the main city bus of the 1950s, as well as the famous LiAZ-677.
Participants will pay attention to smooth body lines, large windows, chrome details, as well as other metal and glass elements. Under the guidance of the leader, they will create their own sketches on the theme of transport, where the machinery will become part of the image of the capital. To participate, it is necessary to purchase tickets.
From 18:30 to 19:45, the film “Melnikov” will be shown. This is a documentary about an outstanding architect-innovator who created the famous monuments of Soviet avant-garde architecture. The film tells about his main works and creative path — from international recognition to the forced abandonment of the profession and many years of life outside architectural practice, as well as the fate of his legacy. The film will be of interest to guests over 12 years old. Advance booking is required registration. The film screening will be held with the support of the Documentary Film Center.
Detailed information about tickets and registration is available on the official website Moscow Transport Museum.
