Beijing, September 29 /Xinhua/ — Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Tuesday called on Japanese authorities to practically return to the original intentions and starting point of the four China-Japan political documents.
Guo Jiakun made a corresponding statement at a regular briefing for journalists. He reminded that Tuesday marked exactly 54 years since the publication of the Joint China-Japan Statement, which marked the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
As noted by the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the Joint China-Japan Statement, Japan clearly stated that it “fully acknowledges its responsibility” for the war it initiated, that it “recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China,” and that the Japanese government “fully understands and respects” the position of the Chinese government that Taiwan is an integral part of China’s territory. Four China-Japan political documents, including the Joint China-Japan Statement, have laid the political and legal foundation of bilateral relations and established political norms for the proper resolution of such important fundamental issues as history and Taiwan, emphasized Guo Jiakun.
According to him, Chinese-Japanese relations are currently in a difficult situation, and the root cause of this lies in the serious undermining of the political foundation of bilateral relations.
Go Jiakun emphasized that the current leader of Japan not only refuses to rethink the history of his country’s aggression but also asserts that the emergency situation in Taiwan will be a situation “threatening the existence” of Japan. As the Chinese diplomat pointed out, such statements are a blatant challenge to China’s sovereignty and contradict the original aspirations manifested during the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations, as well as Japan’s political commitments to the PRC.
Japan also continues to speculate on the so-called “external threat,” using it as a pretext to accelerate remilitarization, noted Guo Jiakun, adding that this challenges the post-war international order and threatens peace and stability in the region.
“On this day of significant historical importance, we once again call on those in power in Japan to seriously reconsider and correct mistakes, urging in practice a return to the original intentions and starting point of the four China-Japan political documents,” concluded the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. –0–
