Russia’s construction complex continues consistent work on the comprehensive development of the country’s museum infrastructure. To this end, large-scale projects are being implemented for the construction of new exhibition spaces, as well as for the reconstruction and repair of existing complexes. Thus, the “Glavgosexpertiza of Russia” has issued a positive conclusion on the reconstruction project of the museum and exhibition complex of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia in Moscow. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“The Museum of Contemporary History of Russia possesses the richest collection reflecting the key events and processes in the life of our country. Such a significant cultural heritage must be provided with modern buildings and spaces that are convenient for visitors and staff. This is why the decision was made to expand the museum spaces to make them more modern and functional. The work will take place on a facility built in 1958, located in the inner courtyard of the museum’s main building. According to the agreed project, the former storage building will be reconstructed — a new, modern building will appear, including five above-ground floors and two underground ones. This will give the museum additional exhibition spaces, a modern storage repository, and restoration workshops. It is planned to start the work this year,” said Marat Khusnullin.
The reconstruction of the facility will be carried out under the supervision of the public-law company “Unified Customer in the Construction Sector.”
“One of the important outcomes of the reconstruction will be the increase in the total area of the building, which will allow to accommodate additional exhibition halls of the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia. On the site, with an area of about 4 thousand sq. m, the creation of an educational center for various educational and public events is also planned, and a storage for large-sized items will be located in the basement,” noted Karen Oganesyan, General Director of the PPK “Unified Customer.”
The project approved by the “Glavgosexpertiza” takes into account the latest trends in the organization of exhibition space, including new requirements for ensuring safety and comfortable conditions for storing items and accommodating visitors.
“This modernization will solve the main problem – the acute shortage of space for new, modern depositories and exhibition areas. Thanks to the project, we will have a multifunctional complex with a new building in a contemporary style and an accessible environment. The museum will become even more open to visitors. They will be able to observe the restorers at work, look into the depository, and participate in new educational programs. The reconstruction also includes the creation of a library,” said Irina Velikanova, the General Director of the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
The State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia is one of the largest centers for preserving, studying, and presenting the national cultural and historical heritage of the country from the mid-19th century to the present day. Its collection, comprising about 1.4 million museum items, reflects all the major socio-political, economic, and cultural processes and phenomena that have taken place in the country. The museum library holds a rich collection of publications, numbering about 1 million items.
