Turkmenistan intends to initiate intergovernmental consultations at the UN to develop a global peace strategy based on the principles of security and preventive diplomacy. This was stated by the country’s permanent representative to the UN, Vepa Hadzhiev, speaking on Monday at the general political debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

He also proposed proclaiming a Decade of Dialogue and Preventive Diplomacy, which, according to him, could give an institutional character to international efforts to prevent conflicts and strengthen trust.

Khadzhiev emphasized that Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, recognized three times by the UN General Assembly, forms the basis of the country’s approach to conflict resolution. Ashgabat also intends to present at the current session a draft resolution on the role of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027. Additionally, Turkmenistan has proposed the creation at the UN of a group of friends for multilateral cooperation and the sovereign equality of states.
The Turkmenistan representative paid special attention to artificial intelligence. The country proposes to develop, under the auspices of the UN, an international code for the peaceful use of AI in international relations and diplomacy, as well as to hold an expert dialogue in Ashgabat on issues of digital trust and responsible AI use. “Artificial intelligence carries enormous potential, but requires responsible international governance,” Hajiev stated.
Speaking about transport and economic ties, Hadzhiev proposed considering the creation in Turkmenistan, under the aegis of the UN, of an international center for sustainable trade logistics and customs cooperation, as well as establishing an interregional transport corridor that would connect South and Central Asia with Europe via the Caspian Sea. Turkmenistan also proposed founding the Ashgabat Climate Dialogue – a platform for regular political and expert interaction and the implementation of practical climate initiatives. Special attention, according to Hadzhiev, should be given to strengthening the climate resilience of regions suffering from drought and water resource shortages.
