“Moscow Electronic School» (“MESH”) turned 10 years old. In 2016, it became the city’s electronic diary and journal, as well as a library of educational materials. After a decade, the service has transformed into the largest digital educational platform, with no direct equivalents anywhere in the world. Sergey Sobyanin spoke about this in his blog.

“By the 2026/2027 academic year, the ‘MESH’ services covered over seven thousand schools in 12 regions of the country, including Moscow, where about 4.7 million children study, which is 26 percent of Russian schoolchildren. And accounting for parents and teachers, the total number of users of the Moscow platform exceeded 10 million people. The demand for the system is enormous: only in the past academic year, the number of accesses to the ‘MESH’ electronic diary exceeded one and a half billion,” noted Sergey Sobyanin.

For students, “MESH” offers the current class schedule, grades, and homework online, as well as an electronic library that is always on hand. Today, it contains more than 1.8 million verified educational materials, including video lessons, interactive applications, digital textbooks, fiction, and much more. With the “MESH” library, you can learn new material or review what has been covered, prepare for exams, find and read an interesting book, and even conduct experiments in a virtual laboratory.

The platform features a service called “Student Portfolio.” It stores a child’s long-term achievements in academics, sports, and creativity. The first steps towards winning at competitions are made by children precisely at the “Moscow Electronic School.”

Teachers using “MESh” are freed from routine tasks by combining grading, assigning homework, and communicating with parents in a single digital environment. In their work, teachers use ready-made lesson plan templates, assign tasks in the form of tests with automatic result checking, and utilize a collection of educational materials in the “MESh” library. This saves them from developing the curriculum from scratch, manually checking each assignment, and searching for materials for lessons.

The platform’s analytical tools help track the level of material mastery and promptly identify gaps in students’ knowledge. For children who missed classes, teachers can assign targeted video lessons, and for the whole class, give game-based assignments to review the material. Additionally, for teachers, an AI-based chatbot has been created to facilitate note-taking and selecting materials for lessons.

“For parents, ‘MESH’ is the main source of knowledge about their children’s school achievements. In addition, it has simplified the resolution of many everyday issues. Obtaining a certificate of study or consent for offsite events can now be done in just a couple of clicks. An electronic certificate is prepared in a few minutes instead of the three days required for a paper document. Just last academic year, moms and dads used this opportunity more than 3.9 million times,” the Mayor of Moscow added.

Thanks to the integration of the “MESh” with the unified medical information and analytical system, information about missed classes due to illness is automatically transmitted to the electronic journal. There is no longer a need to bring a paper certificate from the clinic. It is issued electronically at the clinic and is accessible to medical staff of educational institutions.

Gradually, “MESH” is becoming a universal digital key that provides children and parents access to many services. For instance, thanks to the “Moskvyonok” card (the namesake service has long been part of “MESH”), a student can enter the school, pay for meals in the cafeteria without using cash, or visit a museum for free, while parents can use the service to order hot meals for the child and manage their purchases in the buffet.

Since 2024, the “MESH College” service has been operating, assisting 170 thousand students and teachers. After studying for nine years in a digital environment, students continue to use familiar platforms for professional education. Since September, electronic student IDs have appeared in the mobile application of the same name. Student status can now be confirmed using a QR code on the smartphone screen.

In the future, artificial intelligence is planned to be introduced into the “Moscow Electronic School.” Even now, the intelligent service “Digital Teacher” helps students improve their knowledge in mathematics, physics, computer science, and English, and the AI tutor that appeared in the spring in the electronic diary allows better preparation for the unified state exams in computer science and mathematics at both basic and advanced levels.

“The plan is to teach the ‘Digital Teacher’ to help schoolchildren with Russian language and biology, and later with other subjects. New competitive mechanics and rewards will appear in the electronic diary to increase children’s interest in studying. And of course, we will develop services that help choose a future profession. In general, there is still a lot of work ahead. The second decade of ‘MESH’ promises to be as rich in discoveries as the first 10 years,” Sergey Sobyanin concluded.
