In State Museum of the Defense of Moscow, subordinate to the capital Department of Culture, on September 30 from 10:00 to 17:30, the program “September 30, 1941. The Beginning of the Battle for Moscow” will take place, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of one of the largest battles of the Great Patriotic War and World War II. The program includes a tour of the permanent exhibition “The Great Feat of the Defenders of Moscow,” a lecture “Heroes of the Moscow Battle. The Lyudinovo Underground,” a screening of the documentary film “Stop ‘Typhoon’!”, an interactive program “Call Sign Star,” and the play “Children of War” by the “MiRa” theater.

From 10:00 to 17:30, visitors will be shown a documentary film “Stop the ‘Typhoon’!”. It tells about the first days of the capital’s defense, including the Vyazma defensive operation, the formation of people’s militia divisions, and the protection of the Moscow sky. The film is based on newsreel footage, modern shots at the Victory Museum, the State Museum of the Defense of Moscow, and the Bogoroditskoye Field Museum in Vyazma, as well as expert commentary and unique testimonies of participants in the Battle of Moscow, including the memoirs of Semyon Budyonny, the marshal’s grandson.

At 11:00 an interactive program will take place “Call Sign Star”. Visitors will be told about the role of communication during the Great Patriotic War and the devices used by the army 85 years ago. Participants will be able to operate a military telephone apparatus and go on air using an army radio station.

At 12:00 there will be a tour of the permanent exhibition “The Great Feat of the Defenders of Moscow”. Its participants will learn about one of the most important and decisive events of the Great Patriotic War — the Battle of Moscow. Visitors will see the first footage of the German troops’ invasion, as well as how the residents received the news of the war and what the military commissariat of one of the capital’s districts looked like. They will learn about the creation of the people’s militia and the evacuation of the population, the repelling of German air raids on Moscow, the heroism of air defense soldiers — anti-aircraft gunners, pilots, and balloonists, as well as the selflessness of the city firefighters. Participants of the tour will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a frontline city.

A lecture will take place at 13:00 and 15:00 “Heroes of the Battle of Moscow. Lyudinovo Underground”. Participants will learn about the Lyudinovo Komsomol group, one of the most dedicated organizations of the Great Patriotic War period. Its members operated in the city of Lyudinovo, Kaluga region, in 1941–1942. During this time, the group members carried out dozens of heroic feats. The group included schoolchildren and students. The Lyudinovo members managed to obtain secret intelligence for the command about the movement and location of enemy forces, as well as warehouses with ammunition and equipment.

The program will conclude with the play “Children of War” by the theater “MiRa”. It will begin at 16:00. The literary and musical production is based on genuine children’s letters and diaries from the Great Patriotic War. The performance features lines about the difficult daily life, worries, and resilience of young witnesses to the events. The narrative is complemented by songs from the war years.

Participants of the Special Military Operation and their family members can visit the museum and its section — the Museum of Heroes of the Soviet Union and Russia — free of charge. A ticket must be issued through the service “Mosbilet”, by selecting the appropriate category, or obtain it at the museum’s ticket office. You must present an ID when visiting.

The institution was founded in 1979 and offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the entire journey of the participants of those dramatic events — from the first days of mobilization and daily life arrangements in the besieged city to the triumphant counteroffensive of the Red Army.
