Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Vasile Tofan, speaking at the general political debates of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, presented his country’s candidacy for the position of President of the 82nd session. He also stated that Chisinau will continue to pursue the unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region.

Tofan noted that Moldova faced illegal financing, disinformation, cyberattacks, and voter bribery during the elections. “Russia spent the equivalent of almost 2 percent of our GDP trying to influence last year’s elections,” he said. According to him, Moldovans responded that their home is not for sale. European integration, the prime minister continued, has become the country’s national project.

War Next Door
“We can’t even compare our suffering to the suffering of Ukraine,” Tofan admitted. At the same time, according to him, Russian drones repeatedly violated Moldova’s airspace and fell on its territory. “We must not get used to this. Repetition does not make the violation acceptable,” Tofan said.
“Russia has started an aggressive war against a sovereign neighbor. It has occupied territory and continued to attack Ukrainian cities. Ukraine did not choose this war. Russia chose it,” said the head of government.
According to Tofan, Moldova has taken in people fleeing the war, kept transport routes open, and reduced the cost of rail transit for Ukrainian grain cargo.
Situation in the Transnistrian region
“The Russian armed forces remain in the Transnistrian region of Moldova illegally and without our consent,” he stated. Chisinau will continue to seek their unconditional withdrawal and the peaceful reintegration of the country with full respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We want people on both banks of the Dniester to live together in a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Moldova,” Tofan said.
Candidate for the Chairmanship of the General Assembly
The Prime Minister noted that small states should help shape the international system, not just depend on it, and announced that Moldova has the honor of presenting its candidacy for the post of Chair of the 82nd session of the General Assembly. “We want to contribute to making the UN more effective, more inclusive, and results-oriented,” he said.
