Spaces for family leisure are being renovated and created in Catherine Park. As part of the improvement, children’s playgrounds dedicated to historical-cultural and scientific-cosmic themes, as well as an all-season family center, will appear here.
Children’s playgrounds and play areas
Children of different ages will be able to use the playgrounds. Most of the play structures were custom-made by Russian manufacturers taking into account the park’s historical and cultural concept. The infrastructure will be equipped in accordance with modern safety standards.
The installation of the playground equipment is now being completed. At the same time, specialists have begun laying the base layer of the rubber crumb surface. Then they will apply the final patterned coating, which will complement the visual composition of Catherine Park.
“One large children’s playground with diverse equipment will be located near the family center. Its central element will be a 14-meter stylized complex in the shape of a deer, combining elements of playground equipment and an art object. The silhouette of the animal is outlined with concise geometric shapes, and the antlers and muzzle are highlighted by simple cutouts. Slides of different heights and shapes will be integrated into the body of the animal. Above the deer’s back will rise a transparent cylinder with green stylized shoots — this is a decorative accent referring to the natural theme,” said the deputy head of the city’s Department of Capital Repair.
For younger children, climbing structures, swings, rocking toys, balance beams, and interactive elements will be placed near the central complex to help develop motor skills, coordination, and imagination. There will be a mini-stage, a pergola with swings, and a spacious sand play area.
The second play area will be arranged near the existing planetarium and designed in a scientific and space style. The space will be focused on the cognitive and creative development of children. Climbers in the shape of a sphere and a polyhedral pyramid will be installed here, as well as scientific thematic modules “Solar System,” “Weather Station,” “Hot Air Balloon,” “Energy Generator,” and “Möbius Strip.” Swings, carousels, and a seesaw will also appear on the playground.
All-season family center
A pavilion for the family center is also being created in Ekaterininsky Park. Previously, there were facilities here for summer sports and creative leisure, including a stage, a platform, and a football field where various events were held. However, there was no year-round infrastructure for family leisure in the park. This opportunity will be provided by the new center.
As David Novikov specified, a pavilion with an area of one and a half thousand square meters will appear on the site of the greenhouse. The architectural concept of the pavilion is based on the image of a winter garden. It will be as transparent as possible, with large open spaces flowing into the park’s green areas. The columns at the entrance are designed to support climbing plants. Decorative louvers on the upper band of the pavilion will create shading and add an airy appearance to the structure.
The foundation for the pavilion has already been prepared, its structure, floors, and roof have been assembled, and the rough floor screed has been completed. The installation of stained-glass glazing and facade elements is being finalized, and specialists are laying engineering systems. The next phase will be the interior finishing of the rooms.
Inside, a year-round children’s area with a play complex and three halls for events of various formats will be equipped. The pavilion includes offices for center staff, a small café with a dining area, and technical rooms.
In the children’s play area, there will be a large climbing structure shaped like a tree with a slide, continuing the park’s natural theme. Special safety nets will prevent falls from height, and at the base of the tree, there will be a ball pit for play on the lower level. There will also be an individual furniture play system called “Snake,” consisting of various benches where kids can sit, stand, play, and climb, as well as animal figures and tables for creativity and group activities. For visitor convenience, the play area will be equipped with lockers for personal belongings and its own restrooms. Staff and animators will have a separate place to rest and a changing room.
The family center plans to hold master classes, lectures, club activities, and other events. To accommodate various types of events on a single site, the halls will be made transformable: they can either host several small, separate meetings or be combined into a larger hall with greater capacity for big events. For example, it could host reporting concerts of dance studios, chamber presentations, and lectures with an audience of up to 270 people.
The equipment of the halls will allow their configuration to be changed depending on the format of the event. Folding tables can be arranged separately, based on the classroom principle, or in groups for joint activities. Stackable chairs will allow accommodating a large audience or freeing up space for activities. The transformable hall will be equipped with a mobile stage, screens, and specialized lighting. Thick curtains with electric drives will allow darkening the room during presentations and improving its acoustic properties.
