The International Scientific Conference “Dynamic Processes in Catalytic Structures” (DPCS-2026) is being held at ITMO University in Saint Petersburg from September 21 to 25, 2026. The event is dedicated to current issues of advanced approaches to intensifying catalytic processes. The conference’s topics focus on intensifying processes for the production of valuable chemical products, processing hydrocarbon feedstock and biofuels, producing hydrogen for industrial and energy needs, and addressing environmental protection challenges. Scientists from Novosibirsk State University participated in the event. Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry at NSU Ekaterina Parkhomchuk presented a new idea with scientific justification for environmentally friendly recycling of plastic waste.

— Our proposal is to shift from the traditional practice of incineration and burial to the paradigm of ‘clean and smart chemistry,’ which extends the life cycle of hydrocarbons., – explained Ekaterina Parkhomchuk.

In her report, she noted that this technology allows recycling the main part of plastic waste, from polyethylene films and plastic bottles to foam and tires. The solution lies in the use of new catalysts, optimization of operating temperature and pressure in the catalytic processing. As a result, raw materials can be obtained from which valuable products are produced at petrochemical enterprises: polymers, motor fuels, and lubricants.

Ekaterina Parkhomchuk stated that in the development of the catalytic processing technology, “the most complex physico-chemical analysis methods were used in order to precisely understand the properties of the raw materials and the products obtained from them, as well as the catalysts and their precursors.”

— This provides a foundation for applied work, allowing us not to guess but to construct the future of recycling with high precision., – explained the head of the department of physical chemistry at NSU.

Director of the Institute of Petrochemistry and Catalysis of the Ufa Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Marat Agliullin he saw the practical value of catalytic processing technology in the emergence of the “new hydrocarbon economy”.

— The consequences of implementation will be colossal: reducing the burden on landfills, decreasing the carbon footprint, and providing oil refining enterprises with alternative raw materials. This is the foundation for technological sovereignty in waste processing., – predicted Marat Agliullin.
