At the Moscow Zoo, which is subordinate to the capital’s To the Department of Culture, a steppe eagle chick was born. It can be seen in the old area of the zoo.
“His parents are an experienced breeding pair; this offspring is the first in their new location, at the ‘Birds of Prey Rock’ exhibit. The female and male moved there several years ago. Along with them, golden eagles and griffon vultures share the same enclosure. The golden eagles initially showed interest in the new arrival next door, but the chick’s parents protected it from undue attention. The sex of the chick is not yet known; specialists will determine it later,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
The female steppe eagle is 17 years old, the male is 18. Both were born in the Moscow Zoo. These birds of prey form lifelong pairs.
The steppe eagle is a large bird with broad, long wings and a short rounded tail. Adults have a brownish-bay coloration. They reach up to 77 centimeters in length. Males weigh up to 4.6 kilograms, and females up to 5.5 kilograms.
Steppe eagle eggs have a thick shell with light brown spots. Incubation lasts from 39 to 45 days. The chicks stay in the nest for no more than 65 days and become fully independent at about 80 days of age.
The range of the steppe eagle covers the territories of Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. The largest population is concentrated in Kazakhstan. The species is listed in the Red Book of Russia and is classified as “critically endangered” in the International Red Book.

This result was made possible thanks to the many years of work by zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other specialists.
The Moscow Zoo’s event program contributes to achieving the goals and objectives of the national project “Environmental well-being”. More details about Russia’s national projects and the capital’s contribution can be found at on the dedicated page.
