In recent days, the Russian armed forces have repeatedly carried out strikes across Ukraine. As a result, civilians have been killed and injured, residential houses, hospitals, shops, and workplaces have been damaged. This was reported on Thursday by the United Nations Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine. Ballistic and cruise missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs were used in the strikes.
From September 1 to 24, the Mission recorded the deaths of at least 200 civilians and injuries to another 1,234 people on the territory of Ukraine. These data are preliminary and are expected to increase as the information is verified.
On Thursday, the Russian armed forces struck a vegetable sorting facility at a farm in Stara Hnylytsia, Kharkiv region, according to the Monitoring Mission report. Local authorities stated that seven civilians were killed, and another 12 were injured. According to available information, all of them were farm workers sorting vegetables at the time of the strike.
“Workers died while sorting vegetables. Families were trapped under the rubble of their own homes. The strikes hit shopping centers, post offices, pharmaceutical companies, food warehouses, and gas stations, and repeated drone attacks leave civilians almost no respite,” said Mission head Danielle Bell. “All of this happened within 48 hours – after several months of increasing civilian casualties,” she added.
In Kyiv, large-scale night strikes often follow repeated drone attacks throughout the day. Out of 24 days in September, 16 were marked by civilian casualties in the capital. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, no other month has seen such a high number of days with civilian casualties in Kyiv. Odessa and the Odessa region were also subjected to repeated strikes: residential buildings, a hospital, a shopping center, and other civilian facilities were damaged.
Almost daily, Mission staff visit strike sites and talk to victims and witnesses to document their effects on civilians. “What stands out especially is the frequency of attacks and the striking variety of civilian objects they affect: these are places where people live, work, shop, and obtain necessary services,” Bell said.
Ukraine has also intensified strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation. Local authorities report a growing number of civilian casualties against the background of this trend toward escalation.
International humanitarian law prohibits attacks directed against civilians and requires taking all practically possible precautions to protect the civilian population, the UN reminds.
