Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University took 1st place among universities in Russia in an authoritative world ranking Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in the subject area of “Metallurgical Engineering.” St. Petersburg Polytechnic scored 93.5 points and entered the group of universities ranked 151–200.

The Ural Federal University and the MISIS University of Science and Technology also entered the top three leaders in this discipline.

GRAS evaluates universities in 57 subjects across fields such as natural, engineering, medical, and social sciences, as well as life sciences. The ranking is based on nine indicators grouped into five categories: world-class faculty, world-class research outcomes, high-quality research, research impact, and international cooperation. The ranking uses a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to assess the performance of universities worldwide in specific subjects.

First place in the subject area “Metallurgical Engineering” is a direct result of the university’s systematic work in this direction. It is worth noting that “Materials, Technologies, Production” is one of the three key scientific and technological profiles of Polytechnic’s activity, and here we demonstrate impressive results. The high qualifications of the teaching staff, the quality of the researchers’ scientific work at the university, and the number of publications in authoritative scientific journals ultimately create a synergistic effect, which allowed us to achieve high positions in the ranking,” commented SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy.

It should be noted that SPbPU is actively expanding the geography of partnerships and attracting foreign specialists. In 2026, 89 teachers from 20 countries, including India, Vietnam, and others, joined the university’s teaching staff. In addition, in June 2026, SPbPU and Zhejiang University (China) signed a strategic partnership agreement for 2026−2031, covering materials science, additive technologies, energy, and biomedicine. And on September 21, 2026, the Polytechnic was visited by a delegation from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy of the PRC in Russia, and the Consulate General of the PRC in St. Petersburg ahead of the XXVII meeting of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Humanitarian Cooperation.

For reference

ShanghaiRanking first presented the global ranking of universities by academic subjects in 2009, and in 2016 it was officially renamed the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects ShanghaiRanking (GRAS).

Every year, GRAS presents data on approximately 20,000 subject areas from about 2,000 universities across 100 countries and regions. GRAS analyzes universities that have published a certain number of articles during the period from 2021 to 2025. The publication threshold is set individually for each subject. Bibliometric data is collected from the Web of Science and InCites databases.
