The capital’s ground urban transport began preparations for winter. Seasonal maintenance will be carried out for more than seven thousand buses and electric buses of the state unitary enterprise “Mosgortrans” and trams, which belong to the state unitary enterprise “Moscow Metro.” This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov.

Specialists regularly inspect and service the equipment as necessary, including in preparation for the onset of cold weather.

“We provide comfortable and safe rides for ground urban transport passengers, as instructed by Sergey Sobyanin. For this, in the autumn, as part of preparing for the winter period, we definitely carry out seasonal maintenance. Specialists check heating systems and cold protection elements, as well as prepare snow removal equipment. Ground urban transport remains one of the most in-demand among Moscow passengers. With the start of the new school year and the end of the vacation season, the number of trips by buses, electric buses, and trams has reached over 4.9 million per day,” said Maksim Liksutov.

The technicians will check the operation of the heating and climate control systems, carry out diagnostics of the main units, inspect the glass, rubber seals, and other elements that protect the cabin from cold and moisture, provide instructions to drivers on operating in changing weather conditions, and prepare snow removal equipment and anti-icing materials at operational sites and depots.

Comfort for Everyone: How the Modern Surface Transport of the Capital is Organized

There are more than 900 surface urban transport routes in Moscow. Since 2018, electric buses have been gradually replacing buses on the capital’s routes. They are characterized by smooth operation, absence of noise and vibrations. Today, the network of innovative surface transport covers all districts of Moscow.

On weekdays, passengers make an average of over 1.2 million trips on electric buses. Since 2018, the total number of trips on them has exceeded 1.1 billion.

Buses, electric buses, and trams provide the highest level of service. Low-floor vehicles are fully adapted for the comfort of passengers with reduced mobility. For this purpose, a fold-out ramp and driver call buttons are provided. If necessary, the driver will assist in entering and exiting the vehicle.

Bicycles, strollers, or large luggage can be conveniently placed on the accumulation platform. USB slots are available in the cabin for charging gadgets. Media screens display up-to-date information about upcoming stops and possible transfers. A climate control system maintains the optimal cabin temperature throughout the year. An air curtain, which activates when the doors open, helps retain it inside the cabin.

Today, more than 3,100 electric buses operate at 13 sites of the State Unitary Enterprise “Mosgortrans.” Modern vehicles run on over 310 routes.

According to data from Moscow Eco-Monitoring Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, thanks to the replacement of buses with electric buses in the city of Moscow from 2018 to 2025, about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants and 300 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases were avoided being emitted into the atmosphere.

In 2025 alone, approximately 380 tons of pollutants and about 110 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent of greenhouse gases were avoided.

Restart of the Moscow tram system

In recent years, the capital has effectively rebooted its tram system. Since 2017, the city has been gradually replacing outdated cars with modern “Vityaz-Moscow” and “L’vyonok-Moscow” trams. Today, more than 600 Russian-made cars are operating on the routes. The fleet numbers 604 modern trams — 464 three-section cars.

“Vityaz-Moscow” and 140 single-section trams “L’vyonok-Moscow”. All 36 city routes are served exclusively by modern vehicles. In terms of tram fleet renewal pace, the capital of Russia has become a world leader.

New technologies ensure the further development of the modern tram. Moscow became the first city in the country to begin mass use of trams with an innovative autonomous driving system. Today, 120 trams are equipped with such a system — about 20 percent of the entire fleet: 100 “Lvenok-Moscow” cars and 20 “Vityaz-Moscow” trams.

The technology allows trams to travel sections longer than four kilometers without connecting to the overhead contact wire. This creates opportunities for more flexible development of the tram network, reduces delays caused by wire damage, and also improves the city’s appearance.

One of the main results of the application of this technology was the Moscow Tram Diameters (MTD). In November 2025, Sergey Sobyanin launched a new large-scale project, thanks to which the capital’s tram system received its largest development in recent decades. Routes T1 and T2, running along Akademika Sakharova Avenue, connected the entire city: they provide 41 transfers to metro stations and the Moscow Central Circle, Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) and the railway and pass through four railway stations. Millions of capital city residents have received new convenient routes for their trips.

Today in Moscow, there are two diameters that connect 20 districts of the capital. T1 runs from the Universitet metro station through the city center to Metrogorodok (route length — 27 kilometers), and T2 starts near Chertanovskaya metro station, passes through the center, and ends near the Novogireevo station of MCD-4 (route length — 33 kilometers).

Trams on the MTD run at minimal intervals — every six minutes, and on the common section between the Krasnoselskaya and Tulskaya metro stations — every three minutes. Passengers have made over 23 million trips on the Moscow tram diameters.

Routes T1 and T2 showed a twofold increase in passenger traffic already in the first weeks of operation and are becoming increasingly popular among residents and tourists.

These include transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and the construction sector.

Project “Transport” will be of interest to everyone who wants to learn about the main stages of development in this field, support for electric transport, and the development of the route network.

In recent years, public transport in Moscow has become more comfortable and environmentally friendly, travel time within the city has significantly decreased, and infrastructure for private electric vehicles has emerged.
