Syria has embarked on the path of restoration and revival, said the country’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa at the general political debates of the UN General Assembly.
“We have restored military and civil institutions. The sanctions against us have been lifted,” he said.
Syrian authorities are combating illegal drug trafficking and are working to determine the fate of missing persons. About 3.5 million refugees and displaced persons have returned to their native places.
Al-Sharaa noted that more than 100 countries are in contact with the Syrian leadership, and over 60 diplomatic missions have already been established in the country’s capital.
“Syria has restored its status in the international community,” said the president.
He also reminded that the country cooperates with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and interacts with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“We consider ensuring collective security our duty,” Ash-Sharaa stated.
“Strict adherence to international treaties frees the world from the horrors of chemical and nuclear weapons,” he added.
Golan Heights
The President of Syria also reminded of the need to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 497.
“Any attempts to violate our sovereignty and international law will be suppressed. The Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory,” he stated.
“The world is rejoicing at our return, but Israel is striking Syria,” Ash-Sharaa said.
He once again called on Israel to withdraw its troops to the positions they held on December 8, 2024 (the day of the overthrow of the Bashar Assad regime).
“We reject their aggressive actions that undermine peace and security,” Ash-Sharaa stated.
