In 2026, it was ten years since the opening of the Representative Office of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in Shanghai. During this time, the enrollment of Chinese students has grown many times over. While in 2016 the work with Chinese applicants was only beginning, today more than 2,000 citizens of the PRC are studying at Polytechnic. Following the 2026 admissions for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, 329 Chinese citizens have already been enrolled, and about 190 more are awaiting enrollment. The most in-demand fields are IT, infocommunications, energy, and mechanical engineering.

In September 2026, SPbPU’s Shanghai Representative Office participated in the Open Day of leading foreign universities for Tsinghua University graduates. Representatives of the Polytechnic University spoke about master’s and doctoral programs, scientific research, international projects, and study opportunities for Chinese students. Special attention was given to aerospace engineering, electronics and telecommunications, as well as interdisciplinary engineering fields: artificial intelligence in engineering, materials science for aerospace, biomedical engineering, and robotics.

Chinese graduates also received information about the admission procedures, language preparation requirements in Russian and English, and scholarship opportunities, including quotas from the Russian Government, grants from SPbPU, and scholarships for participants in joint scientific projects. University representatives spoke about scientific laboratories and research centers where students participate in projects from their first year, as well as about living conditions, campus infrastructure, and support for international students. The greatest interest was aroused by internships at high-tech companies, participation in joint Russian-Chinese grants, and employment opportunities after graduation.

The work of the representative office is not limited to attracting students. It helps SPbPU develop cooperation with Chinese universities and companies and find directions for joint scientific and technological projects.

Employees of the SPbPU Representative Office took part in the international technology and personnel cooperation conference “T2+20” in Nanjing. The conference was organized by the Cross-Border Technology Transfer Center at the Center for Promoting the Development of New Productive Forces of Jiangsu Province. Negotiations on scientific and technological directions were held as part of the event.

At a meeting with Nanjing University of Science and Technology and Jiangsu Zhidao Engineering Technologies Co., Ltd., the polytechnic representatives discussed opportunities for cooperation in the field of system digital engineering and the use of the CML-Bench digital twin platform. With the Medical Equipment Research Institute at Southeast University in Suzhou, they discussed the SPbPU project — a multimodal data analysis platform based on artificial intelligence. With Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, they considered areas of collaboration in additive manufacturing, issues related to the creation and use of aluminum-based foam composites, as well as the technology for molding spherical glass lenses.

Cooperation with China is a strategic response to the challenges of our time, when engineering knowledge ceases to be nationally confined, and technological breakthroughs are born at the intersection of different schools. We see our task as preparing specialists through joint educational programs, research projects, and academic exchanges, who are able to work at the crossroads of cultures, languages, and engineering traditions. For us, this is primarily practical work: it helps train engineers who are in demand in both countries,” said Dmitry Arsenyev, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of SPbPU.

In its anniversary year, SPbPU plans to develop network educational programs, scientific cooperation, and expand the university’s activities in the Asia-Pacific region. The representative office in Shanghai will continue to facilitate interaction among students, scientists, and business partners interested in joint projects between Russia and China.
