With the start of the academic year at the Polytechnic, a new musical year began. The grand music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, performed by the Saint Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra “Classica,” opened the 21st season in the White Hall.
The first piece to sound after the summer break was the polonaise from the opera “Eugene Onegin” — this was how the new concert season was set with a solemn and St. Petersburg-style tone. The “Classica” orchestra included several more masterpieces in the program — Symphony No. 4 and the Violin Concerto in D major, in which Alexander Poltoratsky performed brilliantly as the soloist.
Last season, the White Hall broke all its previous records: 200 concerts were held there, making it one of the largest and most sought-after venues in Saint Petersburg. It is especially important that all concert programs are accessible to the university community: attendance is free for Polytechnic University students, and university staff purchase tickets at a 35 percent discount. Students from other universities in Petersburg and city schoolchildren also receive regular discounts.
On October 10, the traditional “Pushkin Days at the Polytechnic” will begin in the White Hall — a festival of Russian music and poetry dedicated to the opening of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum.
“Every year, the festival brings together famous artists, musicians, and fans of Russian culture for a series of concerts and meetings dedicated to the live sound of Russian poetry and music. This important project of Polytech and The White Hall will bring together ten very different events this year, — said Boris Kondin, Head of the Department of Cultural Programs and Youth Creativity. — Viewers will experience the novel “Eugene Onegin” and Pushkin’s drawings on the big screen, an unexpected concert “Russian Classics in Jazz Rhythms,” a concert in honor of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 120th birthday, and the family program “Prokofiev. Peter and the Wolf.” The headliner of the “Pushkin Days at the Polytechnic” will be theater and film actress Nonna Grishaeva.
On October 25, Nonna Grishaeva, combining the best qualities of the Vakhtangov school and inexhaustible stage charm, will recite the immortal lines of Alexander Pushkin, the piercing lyrics of Anna Akhmatova, the subtle and wise poetry of Valentin Gaft, and the brilliant works of Leonid Filatov.
And this is only the beginning of the season! Stay tuned behind the poster. Don’t miss the concerts that bring joy.
