In the “Designers’ Workshop” of the project “Moscow Longevity The qualifying round has concluded. Based on the jury’s evaluation, five creative teams of 10 people each were formed. Now they are to create five original clothing collections under the guidance of experienced mentors.
Until September 30, the finalists of the creative special project “Designers’ Workshop” undergo intensive theoretical training. The program consists of five modules lasting two to three academic hours each: “From Art to Image: The Visual Code of Fashion,” “Concept and Visual Series,” “Form Search and Silhouette Development,” “Detail Elaboration and Technical Drawing,” and “Finalization of the Author’s Image.” After studying the theory, participants will learn the basics of sewing and begin making outfits.
Creative laboratories operate under the guidance of designers Igor Gulyaev, Yulia Dalakyan, Denis Yeremkin, Vadim Merlis, and Ksenia Novikova. Each of the five teams develops a unique concept, turning abstract ideas into real original images. The collections will be shown at the Central House of Writers.
Participants’ projects
Igor Gulyaev’s team is working on the collection “Moscow — Yesenin”, revealing the image of the capital as a place where the poet’s talent blossomed fully. It was in Moscow that Sergey Yesenin became one of the leading figures of Russian poetry.
“In the anniversary fifth season of ‘Designers’ Workshop,’ we are setting an ambitious goal — to create a truly unique and modern look. An interest in fashion at any age is a powerful tool for maintaining energy and intellectual activity. When a person takes care of themselves, looks contemporary, and stays on trend, age does not matter. Fashion has no age, and our task is to help participants reveal their inner beauty and make their style even brighter,” noted designer Igor Gulyaev.
Denis Eremkin, together with participants, is preparing a fashionable tribute to the upcoming 880th anniversary of Moscow. In the collection “880” The spirit of the metropolis is conveyed through graphics and dynamic silhouettes, and the two eights serve as a symbol of the city’s infinite development. This is a view of today’s capital and its future through the lens of contemporary fashion.
Yulia Dalakyan reinterprets the cultural code and folk traditions. In her collection “Firebird” Fairy-tale images of childhood transform into contemporary models with unexpected shapes and decor. The image of the firebird serves as a source of inspiration for creating unusual cuts, unique decorations, and bold color combinations.
Ksenia Novikova’s project “Amulet” dedicated to the unity of the peoples of Russia. Participants study folk costumes from different regions and adapt them to modern trends. Designers refer to the symbol of protection in the ornament and to the first artistic messages of the ancestors — petroglyphs that have survived to this day.
“The participants of the project are very motivated and work with complete dedication. My task as a mentor is to reveal each individual’s uniqueness, provide new knowledge on how to build a clothing collection, and lead the team to a unified idea. Ultimately, the project should tell its coherent story through color, cut, shape, and print,” notes Ksenia Novikova.
A special approach is demonstrated by Vadim Merlis’ laboratory, which is creating a collection “Archival Chic”. Participants give a second life to items that have gone out of fashion, remained unsold, or simply bored their owners. Using the quality fabrics of old models as a base, designers alter their cut, add fresh details, and reassemble wardrobe pieces into current runway looks.
Masters of the “silver” age approach the creative process with maximum awareness. They know the features of their figure exactly, have already formed a unique style, and often fulfill a long-standing dream of becoming a designer that did not come true in their youth.
The selection for participation in the fifth season of the “Designers’ Workshop” project within “Moscow Longevity” took place in several stages. First, senior representatives attended open master classes, where they received a special album for practical exercises. The completed creative assignment with collection sketches was submitted by the authors for review by a competent jury. Based on the selection results, each designer invited the participants closest to them in spirit to join their team.
The finale of the “Designers’ Workshop” will be the final show at the House of Writers. As usual, the models will be students aged 55 and over from the “Royal Posture” school of the “Moscow Longevity” project.
