More than 56 thousand first-year students of capital city colleges will undergo a comprehensive adaptation program this academic year. It will help the students settle into the new environment faster, get to know the college and their classmates, as well as take the first steps in professional development. “For two years now, metropolitan colleges have been successfully implementing a comprehensive adaptation program for first-year students; since 2024, over 97,000 students have completed it. Curators, teachers, and student mentors will work with the students for a whole year. They will help them understand organizational matters and comfortably integrate into college life. In September alone, more than 50 thematic events will be held for the students, organized taking into account the specifics of the industries. First-year students will participate in festivals, workshops, quests, visit various companies and city enterprises—they will learn more about their chosen profession and meet future employers,” the agency’s press service said.
School days without worry
The freshman orientation program includes four areas — “My College,” “My Group,” “My Activity,” and “My Profession.” Thus, the “My College” track helps newcomers get settled in the new environment and meet teachers and staff. Starting September 1, the students participate in interactive tours of the buildings and meet with the administration in an informal setting.
The “My Group” track is aimed at creating a comfortable atmosphere within the team. Freshmen participate in networking sessions, team-building trainings, and creative meetings where they can get to know each other better.
As part of the “My Activity” track, students get acquainted with student organizations, participate in festivals, sports competitions, creative projects, volunteer campaigns, and cultural events.
The “My Profession” direction is dedicated to careers. First-year students get acquainted with employers, successful alumni, and winners of professional championships. Students also participate in job fairs and themed events, which positively impacts the development of necessary competencies. Already in the first months of study, the students see real career prospects, which helps them consciously build their educational path.
Moreover, even before the start of the academic year, each student receives a “Freshman Guide” handbook during a meeting with their mentor. This is a navigator in the form of an electronic memo or brochure, containing important information about the college — from internal regulations and leadership contacts to social benefits, psychological support, and leisure activities.
Additionally, for each specialty, a “Professional’s Guide” handbook has been developed. It contains the curriculum, session schedule, information about internships, the graduate’s career map, partner companies, and group curators’ contacts.
Support for newcomers is also provided by student mentors who, together with supervisors, help the students get involved in academic and extracurricular life.
“Every year we hold about 100 events — from welder and refrigerator repairman cups, Victory marches to choir battles and the ‘Daring Maslenitsa.’ All of them take place in a warm atmosphere where everyone feels involved. Newcomers receive strong support from student mentors: after completing a special course, they, together with curators, help the students choose clubs and sections, and participate in organizing events. Thanks to the cohesive work of the entire team, the college creates an environment that helps each student believe in themselves and become a true professional by graduation,” noted Ivan Stepanov, director of the I.A. Likhachev Moscow Technological College.
