Beijing, September 15 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, an official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Defense expressed strong disagreement with the joint military exercises conducted by Japan, the United States, and Australia, warning that actions facilitating Japan’s military ambitions would plunge the region into a dangerous vortex.
Official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Defense Jiang Bing made this statement at a press briefing, responding to a question about the exercise “Orient Shield 26,” which is taking place in Japan from September 8 to 24.
These exercises are positioned as a “shield,” but in reality, they amount to the promotion of advanced deployment of strategic offensive weapons. According to Jiang Bing, this not only harms the legitimate security interests of other countries but also increases the risk of a regional arms race and military confrontation, posing a serious threat to security and stability in the region.
Japan, as a country defeated in World War II, is prohibited by the Potsdam Declaration and Japan’s pacifist constitution from acquiring offensive weapons.
However, in recent years, this country has consistently violated these restrictions and its exclusively defensive policy, actively developing long-range offensive weapons and using joint exercises with foreign countries to accelerate its “remilitarization,” noted Jiang Bin.
“Any actions that fuel Japan’s military ambitions will only plunge the region into a dangerous whirlpool and inevitably harm all parties involved,” he warned.
