A new advanced training program “Gas exchange in plants under natural conditions and in experiments” has been approved at Novosibirsk State University. This practice-oriented course was developed Climate Center of NSU together with At the advanced engineering school of NSU. The program is designed not only for scientists, educators, and graduate students but also for specialists who solve applied tasks in seed production, breeding, agronomy, agricultural biotechnology, crop production, and environmental monitoring. The acquired methods will help assess the physiological state of plants, their productivity, compare different species and varieties both in natural conditions and in greenhouses and hothouses, study plant resistance to adverse environmental conditions, and obtain objective data for making production decisions.
The course is based on practical work with the LI-6800 portable gas exchange system manufactured by LI-COR. Participants will become familiar with the device, learn how to prepare and calibrate the system, select measurement parameters, and conduct research in laboratory and natural conditions. Special attention will be given to quality control, processing, visualization, and interpretation of the obtained data.
— In the classes, we do not limit ourselves to demonstrating the device. Each participant independently goes through the entire research cycle — from preparing and setting up the equipment to conducting measurements, checking data quality, and analyzing them. For example, using the LI-6800, you can compare how different plant species respond to high temperature, moisture deficiency, or changes in lighting; determine the conditions under which photosynthesis intensity decreases; assess the plants’ water exchange and identify signs of stress reaction. Such studies are in demand when selecting promising economically valuable plant species, species with high productivity; assessing plant resistance to changes in environmental factors; developing cultivation technologies and selecting optimal growing conditions. It is important for us that upon completion of the program, the participant not only knows how to turn on and configure the device but also understands how to turn measurement results into meaningful conclusions. During the practical sessions, each participant will conduct measurements, process the obtained results, and prepare their analysis. Thus, after the training, a person will leave not only with the skill to work on modern equipment but also with their own data and a ready example of its interpretation, which they can use as a basis for further scientific or applied work., — said the program instructor, candidate of biological sciences Alexandra Guseva.
The training is held in person in the format of a three-day internship. The total duration of the program is 16 academic hours, most of which are allotted to practical exercises. After successfully passing the final assessment, participants are issued a certificate of professional development of the established form.
This course allows researchers and company specialists to acquire additional competencies when working with equipment. Moreover, upon completion of the training, participants receive not only a qualification improvement certificate and practical skills in working with the equipment, but also the results of their own material research, which can be used in scientific and applied activities.
