Aid to the residents of Sudan
Hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons in Sudan are facing severe housing shortages and increasing risks due to ongoing fighting and heavy rains. Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is warning of a possible imminent halt to humanitarian aid deliveries within the unified system coordinated by this UN agency. Without immediate support from donors, existing stocks of shelter materials, as well as sanitation and essential items, could run out as early as the end of September.
IAEA Conference
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, opened the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna today. He noted the agency’s work on verifying Syria’s compliance with obligations under the nuclear safeguards system, as well as the coordination and agreement with Moscow and Kyiv on the seventh local ceasefire in the area of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. This allowed for necessary repair work after the plant was left without external power supply. Grossi also acknowledged that many problems remain, including those related to Iran’s nuclear program.
Money transfers
The volume of money transfers from migrants to their relatives in low- and middle-income countries is expected to reach $728.6 billion in 2025. This is stated in a new report by the International Fund for Agricultural Development. Since 2016, the volume of transfers has increased by 94 percent, outpacing population and migration growth rates. It is estimated that 220 million migrants and diaspora members support 1.1 billion relatives. In 23 countries, remittances account for more than 10 percent of GDP, and in nine they exceed the value of exports of goods and services.
AI Regulation
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Monday called on states and companies to urgently take measures so that the regulation of artificial intelligence does not lag behind the rapid pace of technological development and its unprecedented risks. According to him, autonomous AI is already accelerating the tempo and expanding the scale of wars, weakening the safeguards that prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction. Türk called for urgent mobilization of efforts on multilateral platforms to develop practical steps based on international human rights norms.
