Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin and Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov visited the Metrovagonmash plant in Mytishchi. This enterprise is the main manufacturer of cars for the Moscow metro.

“The Moscow Metro is today one of the best in the world. Both in terms of services and rolling stock. It is the youngest. The ‘Moscow-2026’ trains are among the best in the world thanks to the wonderful team at Metrowagonmash, which is located in Mytishchi. This team has a history of over a century, having created the first metro trains that started operating in Moscow, and today the company remains a flagship. A wonderful project, wonderful trains used by millions of people every day,” noted Sergey Sobyanin.

During the visit, the Mayor of Moscow announced the decision to extend the metro to the nearest cities of the Moscow region. The construction of the corresponding lines and stations will become a top priority of the Moscow Metro development program in the period after 2030.

“According to the preliminary plans we have outlined with the Moscow Region, the Moscow Metro will extend beyond the MKAD with seven lines and will serve the urban districts located around the MKAD, where about a third of the Moscow Region’s population lives. These are Mytishchi, Krasnogorsk, Khimki, Leninsky District, Odintsovo, Balashikha — the largest urban districts that are, of course, closely linked with Moscow, and Moscow is closely linked with them,” explained the Mayor of Moscow.

The extension of the metro into the Moscow region became possible thanks to systematic efforts to develop the capital’s transport framework. Between 2011 and 2026, more than 270 kilometers of new lines were built and reconstructed, and 130 metro stations were opened, including Moscow Central Circle and Large Circle Line. In addition, four were discovered Moscow Central Diameters— 303 kilometers of tracks and 138 stations.

“The first stage in creating a unified transport system was the four MCCs — a joint project with Russian Railways. The second was the unified trunk bus network. And today we have moved on to the prospective plan — a major program to extend the metro into the large centers of the Moscow Region. At the same time, the rolling stock of the metro and city surface transport was updated. After all, electric buses, trams, and taxis are the final links of the route that pick up passengers from metro stations. Today, Moscow leads Europe in the number of electric buses: over 3,100 modern vehicles. The city continues to actively develop this environmentally friendly mode of transport.

Creating a new rail framework and updating the city transport rolling stock made it possible to radically redistribute passenger flows.

In the early 2010s, 16 sections of the Moscow Metro operated at peak hour capacity limits. Today, the metro has significant spare capacity. This made it possible to decide on extending several radial lines into the Moscow region.

New metro stations

Currently, two Moscow Metro stations are open on the territory of the Moscow Region — “Myakinino” on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line and “Kotelniki” on the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line. They are used by residents of the urban districts Krasnogorsk, Kotelniki, and Lyubertsy. A total of 900 thousand people live here. Another nine metro stations located in the capital significantly handle passenger flows from the Moscow Region.

The Moscow metro development plans announced today by Sergey Sobyanin provide for the construction of about 35 new stations by 2035. 12 stations will be located directly in the Moscow region. The metro extension into TiNAO and the Moscow region will bring the city closer for two million Muscovites and 3.7 million residents of the Moscow suburbs.

Governor of the Moscow Region Andrey Vorobyov noted that the key task of the region’s development is to seek cooperation with the capital in various areas: in transport, healthcare, education, economy, as well as the creation of industrial parks.

“There isn’t a person in Mytishchi who wouldn’t want to have an additional option to leave their city and come back to it, and that’s the metro. It’s the same in Balashikha. All our cities are developing — Leninsky City District, Khimki. The appearance of metro stations in them is something that will very noticeably affect the quality of life. It’s clear that building the metro is a complex, technological, and costly endeavor. And before actively starting the construction phase, a lot will be spent on designing and finding the smartest engineering solutions, because all of this involves money and time. But we highly value our partnership with Moscow,” said Andrey Vorobyov.

Given the current stations, by 2035, 33 percent of the residents of the Moscow region will live in the service area of the Moscow metro. It is expected that about 600 thousand passengers per day will use the new metro sections. Their travel time will be reduced on average by 30–60 minutes. Trips from the Moscow region to Moscow will become approximately twice as fast.

The overall reduction in the load on outbound highways near the new metro sections will be 10–15 percent.

Where the new stations will be located

In total, the radial metro lines will be extended in seven directions.

  1. The extension of the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya line to Krasnogorsk will improve transportation services in this urban district, which is projected to have a population of over 610 thousand people.

On the section “Novorizhskaya” — “Izumrudnye Hills” six kilometers long, it is planned to place two stations: “Krasnogorsk” and “Izumrudnye Hills” (hereinafter – the project names of the new stations).

  1. The Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya line will be extended from the Planernaya station to the Kurkino district (North-Western Administrative Okrug) and the city of Khimki in the Moscow region. The length of the new section will be 5.1 kilometers. It will improve transportation services for an area with a forecast population of about 454 thousand people. The section is planned to include the stations “Khimki” and “Kurkino”.
  2. A new section of the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya line, 3.5 kilometers long, will run from the Medvedkovo station to the Mytishchi station. It will allow residents of the Mytishchi urban district, with a projected population of 540 thousand people, as well as nearby settlements in the Moscow region, to reach the capital faster.
  3. The Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line is planned to be extended from the “Golyánovo” station to the city of Balashikha. The length of the new section will be 8.3 kilometers. It will have two stations: “Vostochny” and “Balashikha.” Their appearance will improve transportation service in the area with a projected population of more than 670 thousand people, both in the Vostochny district (Eastern Administrative Okrug) and in Balashikha.

5–6. On the new section of the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line, six kilometers long, it is planned to have two stations. These are “Razvilka” in the eponymous settlement and “Volodarskoye Shosse” in the urban-type settlement of Misailovo in the Leninsky urban district of the Moscow region.

 

It is assumed that the second phase of the under-construction Biryulyovskaya line will run from the “Biryulyovo” station through the territory of the Leninsky city district to the Moscow district Shcherbinka and further to Kommunarka and the Filimonkovsky district. On the 40-kilometer section, it is planned to build 12 stations. These are “Klubnichnye Polya” (Strawberry Fields), “Lopatino”, “Drozhzhino” in the Moscow region, as well as “Marshal Savitsky”, “Shcherbinka”, “Ostafyevo” (transfer to the Sokolnicheskaya line), “Ostafyevo-2”, “Yelovaya”, “Kedrovaya” (transfer to the Troitskaya line), “Kalinovaya”, “Yuryev Ruchey”, and “Sokolovo” (transfer to the Solntsevskaya line) in Moscow.

The extension of the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line and the second stage of the Biryulyovskaya line will improve transportation services in the territories of the Moscow region with a projected population of over 690,000 residents, as well as Shcherbinka and other districts of the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky administrative districts of Moscow.

  1. The Filevskaya line is planned to be extended to Skolkovo. The length of the new section will be 12 kilometers and include five stations. They will be accessible to residents of the Ochakovo-Matveyevskoye, Mozhaysky, and Kuntsevo districts, visitors and employees of the Skolkovo Innovation Center, as well as residents of the Odintsovo urban district of the Moscow region with a projected population of over 740 thousand people.

The development plans for the Moscow Metro up to 2035 also included:

— extension of the Sokolnicheskaya line from “Potapovo” station to the Shcherbinka district (six kilometers). New stations will appear: “Buninskaya Alleya” (transfer to the Butovskaya line), “Checherskaya,” and “Ostafyevo” (transfer to the Biryulyovskaya line);

— extension of the Sokolnicheskaya line from the Bulvar Rokossovskogo station to the Yaroslavsky district (8.1 kilometers). The stations MGSU and Yaroslavskaya will be built;

— extension of the Troitsk line from the Troitsk station to the Moskino cinema park (nine kilometers). Stations “Krasnaya Pakhra” and “Moskino” will be built;

— extension of the Solntsevskaya line from Vnukovo airport to the Filimonkovsky district (four kilometers). The station “Sokolovo” will appear (transfer to the Biryulyovskaya line).

The implementation of the Moscow Metro development program will be another step toward achieving the strategic goal — creating a unified, convenient, and accessible transport system in the capital region, which will significantly improve the quality of life for millions of people.

Extending the metro beyond the MKAD will mean the closest integration of Moscow and the nearby cities of the Moscow region within a single large Moscow agglomeration.

The largest Russian manufacturer of metro cars

For more than 90 years — since the opening of the Moscow Metro — the main supplier of trains for the capital’s underground has been the Mytishchi-based plant “Metrovagonmash.” It is part of JSC “Transmashholding.” It was here, in 1934, that the first domestic metro train was assembled.

The company’s history began several decades earlier. The Mytishchi Carriage Works was founded in 1897. Initially, it produced freight and passenger railway carriages. In 1904, the enterprise started manufacturing trams; from 1914 to 1918, it produced carriages and sanitary trains; and in 1926, it mastered the production of the first suburban trains.

In the 1930s, the plant became a key center of domestic meter car manufacturing, which is reflected in its current name.

During the Great Patriotic War, the company temporarily switched to producing military products, including SU-76 self-propelled artillery guns. Since 1945, the company’s primary focus again became the production of subway cars for the USSR and Eastern European countries.

In 90 years of operation, the company’s designers have developed more than 40 types and modifications of metro cars.

Today, “Metrovagonmash” is the largest manufacturer of metro cars in Russia. It is also among the top four largest suppliers of metro cars in the world.

The enterprise’s production capacity is over 800 wagons per year. This is a full-cycle production complex that combines preparatory, mechanical, welding, painting, and assembly work, as well as testing and acceptance of the finished rolling stock.

About three thousand people work at JSC “Metrovagonmash.” In addition to producing new rolling stock, the enterprise supplies spare parts, performs major repairs and upgrades of cars, as well as provides service and warranty maintenance.

The scale of international presence is clearly visible in operating statistics. More than 10 thousand wagons manufactured by “Metrovagonmash” transport over 16 million passengers daily in 19 metro systems across 11 countries worldwide.

Andrey Vorobyov noted that thanks to the designers, engineers, and the team as a whole, the plant possesses high product competitiveness and export potential. The companies “Metrovagonmash” and “Transmashholding” are constantly developing.

At the same time, the main customer of the enterprise was and remains the Moscow Metro. The share of products for the Moscow Metro accounts for about 60–70 percent of total production. During the cooperation, the enterprise produced more than seven thousand cars for the city subway. Among them are cars of type E and their modifications, 81–717/714 (“Numbered”), 81–720/721 (“Yauza”), 81–740/741 (“Rusich”), 81–760/761 (“Oka”), as well as the modern “Moscow” series: 81–765/766/767, “Moscow-2019”, “Moscow-2020”, “Moscow-2024”, and the newest modification 81–775/776/777 “Moscow-2026”.

In 2024–2025, Metrowagonmash delivered more than 600 cars to the Moscow Metro.

At the same time, the company continues to fulfill orders for other Russian and foreign metro systems. In particular, in 2025, 128 cars were delivered for the Saint Petersburg metro, 25 for the Novosibirsk metro, 20 for the Minsk metro, and 30 for the Baku metro.

Since the beginning of 2026, the plant has produced 350 metro cars, including 240 cars for Moscow, 54 cars for Saint Petersburg, and 56 cars for Tashkent.

Currently, the flagship and the foundation of the enterprise’s production plan are the next-generation metro cars “Moscow-2026.” The transition to their production became the next stage in the development of the train series created by order of the Moscow Government. New modifications are being developed within the production school established at the enterprise, which combines many years of metro car manufacturing experience and advanced technologies in design, body manufacturing, mechanical processing, welding, painting, equipment assembly, and testing.

It is important to note that today new metro trains are serviced under life-cycle contracts — a total of about five thousand modern cars. This means that for 30 years the manufacturer is responsible for the technical condition of the rolling stock, including performing repairs and diagnostics, servicing air conditioning systems, washing and cleaning the cars.

Thus, the Moscow Metro ensures a high level of reliability and safety in passenger transportation, as well as encourages manufacturers to continuously improve their own technical solutions.

Collaboration

A modern subway car is the result of the work not only of the car-building enterprise itself but also of a wide network of suppliers of components and materials. JSC “Metrovagonmash” has a large base of suppliers located in various regions of Russia. Among them:

— LLC “Scientific and Production Enterprise ‘Sarmat'” (information systems) and LLC “Scientific and Production Enterprise ‘Fromir-Service'” (automatic stern tube lubricators) from the Rostov region;

— LLC “Sibeko” (driver seats and chairs) from Sverdlovsk Oblast;

— LLC “Service Company “Kratos”” (handrails for the salon) from the Nizhny Novgorod region;

— LLC “MFM Furniture Factory” (passenger sofas) from the Ryazan region;

— the Telemma Gino plant (brake resistors) from the Penza region;

— LLC “Scientific and Production Company Etna Plus” (brake resistors) from the Saratov region;

— LLC “Yarly. Industrial Coatings” (paint and varnish materials) from the Yaroslavl region.

Thus, “Metrovagonmash” in Mytishchi near Moscow is the center of Russian industrial cooperation. Enterprises from various industries participate in the creation of modern metro trains: from manufacturers of metalworking equipment and electrical systems to producers of interior elements, braking equipment, lighting systems, seats, and paint and varnish materials.

The program implemented by the Moscow Government to upgrade the trains of the Moscow Metro and the Central Transport Hub as a whole is one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects, playing a key role in the modernization of domestic transport engineering.

In recent years, it has been the capital that generates 75 percent of the industry’s orders (new metro cars and suburban trains).

The average age of the cars today is 11.7 years. A modern train can accommodate approximately 1,500 passengers. The share of new-generation trains in the capital’s metro fleet is over 80 percent, and by 2030 it will increase to 90 percent. Over the past 10 years, more than five thousand modern cars have been produced.

About five thousand railcars are serviced under lifecycle contracts. Moscow’s share in the supply of equipment and components for urban transport in Russia is about 75 percent.
