Beijing, September 9 /Xinhua/ — In August, China maintained moderate price growth, indicating a stable recovery in domestic demand thanks to supportive measures taken in the country.
According to data published on Wednesday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of China, last month the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main inflation indicator in China, rose by 0.4 percent month-on-month, reversing a trend of decline over three consecutive months, while the year-on-year growth accelerated from 0.5 percent to 0.8 percent.
Statistician from the State Statistics Service Dun Lijuan linked the rise in CPI to a number of factors, including rising energy prices, seasonal food price increases, continued growth in prices for tourist services during the summer holidays, and higher prices for smartphones and computers due to growing demand for computing power.
At the same time, the core consumer price index, which excludes food and energy prices, increased to 1 percent year-on-year (in July, it rose by 0.9 percent).
At the same time, encouraging signals also came from the producer price side. The Producer Price Index (PPI), an indicator of changes in wholesale prices of producer goods, rose by 0.4 percent month-on-month in August (down 0.7 percent in July), while its year-on-year growth rate increased to 3.8 percent.
The State Statistics Service explained the increase in the PPI by the rise in global prices for raw materials, as well as by increased demand in certain sectors caused by the transformation and modernization of domestic industry. -0-
