On September 1, the 14th season of the “Museums. Parks. Estates” olympiad began in Moscow. As part of the project, schoolchildren and preschoolers will be able to get acquainted with the history, architecture, nature, and urban environment of the capital. More than 300 cultural venues are open for completing the tasks. Registration will last until March 15, and the tasks are available from the beginning of the school year. This was announced by the press service of the capital Department of Education and Science.
“At the ‘Museums. Parks. Estates’ Olympiad, children study Moscow through personal experience: they examine exhibits, work with city routes, seek answers, and notice details that often remain unnoticed during a regular walk. In the last season, in the 2025/2026 school year, more than 130,000 Moscow schoolchildren and preschoolers joined the Olympiad. Tasks for the children are prepared by employees of leading cultural institutions of Moscow together with experts from the Center for Pedagogical Mastery,” the department’s press service said.
Participants can select venues on their own in the catalog on Olympiad website. The new season has expanded their list. Among the new additions are the Creative Workshop of theater artist D.L. Borovsky and the Ostankino Museum-Estate. Tasks at each venue are related to its exhibition, history, or unique details, and the level of difficulty is adapted to the participant’s age.
For example, last year at the Moscow Archaeology Museum, eighth and ninth graders worked with archaeological finds: they studied the exhibits and arranged them in chronological order. First and second grade students were invited to explore a showcase about the early history of the city and, for instance, determine which mythical Slavic character an ancient potter depicted on the bottom of a vessel. At the Darwin Museum, elementary school students looked for information about insects in the exhibition and found out what materials they use to build nests, while high school students matched the names of Renaissance and Early Modern period scientists with their contributions to the study of human anatomy and physiology.
The season will conclude with a large-scale game-walk for the winners of the Olympiad. The children will follow an urban route, complete tasks, and study architectural details, historical sites, and features of the urban environment. Last academic year, 10,000 young Muscovites took part in the game.
You can register for the olympiad on the platform “Moscow Electronic School» (“MES”). For schoolchildren, their own account in “MES” will be suitable, and for preschoolers, parents can create a child’s account on the mos.ru portal. The Olympiad “Museums. Parks. Estates” has been held since 2013. Its organizers are Department of Education and Science of the City of Moscow and Moscow City Department of Culture, the project coordination is carried out by Center for Pedagogical Excellence.
