On September 5, a correspondent from china.org.cn visited Heyi Aviation Co., Ltd. in the city of Hefei to learn about the operational scenarios of China’s first fully certified unmanned passenger eVTOL aircraft and to find out about the latest achievements of Anhui Province in transitioning from political planning to commercial implementation of low-altitude economy.

Heyi Aviation is a joint venture established in 2024, specializing in low-altitude air transportation. Just over a year after its founding, the company achieved a breakthrough in key industry certifications. Heyi Aviation became the world’s first eVTOL segment enterprise to hold a full set of permits for legal operation, marking the official transition of Chinese low-altitude passenger transportation into the stage of commercial pilot operation.

Unlike traditional helicopters, the EH216-S features low noise levels and zero emissions, making it optimal for operation in central urban areas. The aircraft does not require large runways – small pads on building rooftops, open park spaces, or near transportation hubs are sufficient.

At present, Heyi Aviation has developed a diversified product line: the EH216-F fire-fighting model is capable of precise fire extinguishing at heights up to 600 meters, while the EH216-L cargo model supports transportation with a maximum payload of up to 250 kg.

Starting with low-altitude tourist sightseeing flights, Heyi Aviation is gradually expanding the application scenarios of eVTOL, including urban air transportation, emergency rescue operations, air logistics, and other areas. Relying on Hefei’s industrial potential, Heyi Aviation is creating a benchmark model for the commercial operation of unmanned passenger aircraft. Anhui province’s advanced experience in the low-altitude economy is being transformed into industry practices worthy of study and dissemination. In this way, the company offers relevant Chinese experience for the development of urban air transportation worldwide.
