Since the beginning of the special military operation (SMO), the musicians of the Moscow symphony orchestra “Russian Philharmonic”, subordinate to the capital Department of Culture, regularly organize humanitarian aid collections and perform in military hospitals for soldiers. Additionally, they invite servicemen and their families to their programs at the State Kremlin Palace, the Moscow International House of Music, and other concert venues in the capital.
“Live music is always about emotions. And we have taken on the mission of giving positive emotions to soldiers for their speedy recovery. There is such a concept as music therapy, and that’s exactly what we are doing. When we hear words of gratitude directly from the servicemen’s mouths, we consider our mission accomplished. After each concert, the guys come up to me and say that their morale has risen,” said Gayane Shiladzhyan, the orchestra director.
The musical program is designed with the audience in mind — it mainly features beloved and familiar Soviet songs. Medical workers and the soldiers themselves note that after the performances, the wounded noticeably feel better. Over four years, the orchestra has held more than 100 charity concerts in hospitals and has allocated over three thousand tickets for military personnel and their families to attend its programs.
Military personnel always express sincere gratitude to the artists for their attention and warmth. They say this during concerts, write it in letters, and convey it through doctors and relatives. For musicians, this is confirmation that their work has not only professional but also emotional value.
Hospitals are regular venues for performances by the cult brigades of Moskonssert. Since March 2022, artists have been traveling there regularly. The concert and cultural-educational activities of the cult brigades in the new regions of Russia support the fighting spirit of the soldiers and also strengthen the faith of the civilians in the strength and unity of the country. Vocalists, instrumentalists, actors, masters of artistic speech, poets, theatrical and musical groups, as well as speakers travel to the new republics. The programs feature patriotic works, Russian and world classics.
“Several times a week we go to Moscow hospitals and monthly — to the area of the special military operation, to the border territories in Crimea, Kursk, and Belgorod. Helping servicemen undergoing rehabilitation is a separate task that we successfully address by creating special programs. All our artists readily go to such concerts, regardless of their workload and status. For example, People’s Artist of the RSFSR Yevgeny Petrosyan, after a concert at the Main Military Clinical Hospital named after Academician N.N. Burdenko, spent more than two hours communicating with servicemen and medical staff, shaking hands with each, and taking photos with everyone who wished. And if you could see how doctors and nurses dance in Mariupol and gratefully shake hands with the artists. For them, such concerts are an opportunity to take a break from extremely hard work and fill themselves with joy for many days ahead,” said Ilya Bachurin, General Director of Mosconcert.
