International Taekwondo Day is celebrated annually on September 4. Today, this sport is a unique synthesis of physical perfection and spiritual culture. The ancient Korean martial art has entered the Olympic Games program. Why people choose taekwondo and where to learn it in the capital — in our article.
Training facilities
Taekwondo is not just a technique of striking with feet and hands, but a worldview that originated over two thousand years ago. The modern form of the martial art took shape in the mid-20th century, when Korean masters united ancient techniques into a sports discipline.
In Korean, “thae” means “foot,” “kwon” means “fist,” and “do” means “way.” Those who practice taekwondo must not only have physical training but also cultivate willpower, respect for their opponent, and a striving for harmony. Today, millions of people around the world practice this sport, and its Olympic status confirms its high level of dynamism and spectacle.
Moscow offers a wide range of venues for practicing taekwondo, from amateur groups to Olympic reserve divisions.
A distinctive feature of the Moscow training system is an early start. Specialists recommend introducing a child to taekwondo as early as five years old, when the foundations of coordination, flexibility, and discipline are laid. The optimal age to begin targeted preparation for admission to a specialized sports school is considered to be seven years old. By this age, a child is already able to grasp complex technical elements and tactical combat schemes.
“In my practice, I often tell patients: ‘The body is a reflection of the soul, emotional state, and inner experiences.’ Taekwondo is a sport where you are simultaneously taught to stop external threats and extinguish internal storms. By repeating combinations of strikes, you train not just the muscles but stress responses. This fight has no age: as long as your breath synchronizes with movement, you are young,” said Aleksandr Kudryashov, psychotherapist at the mental health center.
In Moscow, all conditions have been created to make taekwondo accessible to everyone. In particular, free clubs operate where children can train under the guidance of experienced mentors.
One of such venues is the sports complex “Dvizhenie” on Dorozhnaya Street (house 44). The taekwondo section here is open to everyone regardless of skill level. Training sessions are held twice a week—on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 PM. The group is formed for children aged 14 to 17. It is the perfect place for teenagers wishing to develop physical strength, reaction, and self-confidence.
Taekwondo classes embody the capital’s philosophy of healthy longevity. Physical activity relieves accumulated tension, restores internal balance, and strengthens health, while the opportunity to regularly practice sports near home helps form habits that determine the quality and length of life. How to choose a sport for a child
Before taking a child to taekwondo classes or any other sport, it is recommended to undergo comprehensive children’s testing. It is conducted using modern domestic developments and aims at a comprehensive assessment of children’s development. In less than two hours, specialists determine more than 50 different indicators, including psychophysiological features — reaction speed and nervous system type, anthropometric data, as well as the level of development of basic physical qualities.
The methodology is designed for children aged from five and a half to 12 years and is effective regardless of sports training. After completing the testing, parents receive personalized recommendations on which sport is most suitable for their child, as well as a detailed explanation of which aspects of development should be prioritized.
Choosing a sport for a child is an investment in their health, character, and future. International Taekwondo Day is a great opportunity to get acquainted with this martial art.
