Gyirong /Tibet/, September 4 /Xinhua/ — The Ministry of Emergency Management of China announced on Friday that emergency fuel supply forces from China National Petroleum Corporation /CNPC/ have been mobilized to support the emergency rescue operations in the landslide-affected area of the Gyirong checkpoint in the Tibet Autonomous Region /Southwest China/.
On August 26, a mudflow caused by an ice-rock avalanche in Nepal crashed down onto the Gyirong checkpoint at the China-Nepal border in the Tibet Autonomous Region, resulting in numerous casualties and a large number of people missing.
After the landslide, the CNPC Sichuan Sales Company promptly dispatched tank trucks for emergency refueling to assist the rescue teams.
As of Friday, a total of 451 tons of petroleum products had been delivered, including 163 tons of gasoline and 288 tons of diesel fuel.
Currently, fuel supplies at gas stations in the disaster zone and on adjacent roads are sufficient, and deliveries are stable, the ministry reported.
According to the latest data, as a result of a mudslide that hit the border checkpoint Gyirong, the death of 21 people has been confirmed, and 541 more are listed as missing. The cause of the mudslide is recognized as an ice and rock avalanche that descended from a high mountain glacier in Nepal.
More than 2,300 people were involved in the rescue operations. Several stages of search operations using grid and continuous methods were conducted, covering a total area of about 1.59 million square meters.
