Beijing, September 4 /Xinhua/ — As of Thursday, China has sent 726 military personnel to the area affected by the mudslide in the Gyirong border checkpoint on the China-Nepal border in the Xigazê Autonomous Region (Southwest China) to participate in disaster relief operations, said Jiang Bin, an official spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense of the PRC, on Friday.
According to the latest data from local authorities, as a result of the mudflow that struck the Gyirong checkpoint, caused by the collapse of an ice-rock avalanche on August 26 in Nepal, 31 people have died and 531 are reported missing.
Jiang Bin also reported that the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) and the People’s Armed Police of China have already sent 24 engineering vehicles to the disaster area and conducted more than 20 flights of helicopters and drones.
“The military is actively conducting search and rescue operations, road clearing work, transport operations, and epidemic prevention measures,” Jiang Bin said at a press conference, noting that servicemen have provided medical assistance to local residents and rescuers more than 900 times.
The military will “race against time to find the missing and minimize the number of casualties,” said the Chinese official.
China has deployed more than 2,300 rescuers, and road traffic to the Gyirong checkpoint was mostly restored by Wednesday morning.
