Gazprom Neft, Novosibirsk State University, and Kazan Federal University have agreed on the joint development of hydraulic fracturing technology — a key method for enhancing oil recovery, without which the development of most modern fields is impossible.

Hydraulic fracturing is the primary technology for enhancing hydrocarbon recovery efficiency, used for developing hard-to-recover reserves and mature fields. Planning and conducting hydraulic fracturing is a complex engineering task: it is necessary to consider the geological features of the deposits, select equipment operation parameters and chemical compositions for each field.

The company Gazprom Neft, Novosibirsk State University, and Kazan Federal University will work on developing technologies for digital modeling of underground processes, as well as creating and testing Russian reagents for hydraulic fracturing. The company will provide industrial expertise and facilities for testing new compositions of fluids, proppants, reagents, and other materials used in underground operations. NSU will supply expertise in mathematical and engineering modeling of oil extraction processes, while KFU will provide a scientific-experimental base for studying chemical processes and developing reagents for oil production.

Alexander Sitnikov, Head of the Scientific and Technical Center of Gazprom Neft:

As development of complex reserves becomes more involved, oil production is becoming more knowledge-intensive: a single technological solution increasingly requires expertise from multiple disciplines at once. Therefore, we consistently unite strong scientific schools around specific production challenges. NSU and KFU complement Gazprom Neft’s expertise, and our industrial testing capabilities allow us to more quickly transfer promising ideas from the laboratory to the fields.

Dmitry Pyshny, rector of Novosibirsk State University:

Today, the development of complex technologies is impossible without close cooperation between science and business. Universities provide the fundamental base and new approaches, while an industrial partner helps align them with the real challenges of the industry. The new agreement with Gazprom Neft expands the opportunities for such collaborative work — from conducting research and training specialists to creating and implementing technological solutions..

Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Oil and Gas Technology Directions of Kazan Federal University:

For modern science, it is especially important that research results find practical application. Cooperation with Gazprom Neft allows the university’s scientific competencies to be combined with the expertise and demands of the oil extraction industry. The new agreement creates additional opportunities for joint development of technologies and materials that can be evaluated not only in the laboratory but also in terms of their application in production.

Gazprom Neft has been developing long-term scientific, technological, and educational cooperation with Novosibirsk State University. The university hosts the Gazprom Neft – NSU Scientific and Educational Center, offers a joint master’s program “Modeling of Oil and Gas Systems”, and conducts research in the field of digital subsurface exploration and enhanced oil recovery.

At Kazan Federal University, with the support of the company, a scientific and educational center “Gazprom Neft — KFU” and a laboratory for core research and chemical reagent selection have been established. The university is also a participant in the petrochemical consortium “IDEL-POLIHIM,” created in the Republic of Tatarstan, with which Gazprom Neft implements projects in the development of formulations for a new generation of oilfield chemicals.
