The UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern over the sharp escalation of the situation in the Persian Gulf following new exchanges of strikes between the US and Iran. According to the United Nations, among the dead and wounded are civilians, including participants of a wedding ceremony in Iran. António Guterres firmly condemned the attacks on civilians and reminded the parties of the need to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law. New victims among the civilian population of Ukraine
Staff of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported from Ukraine that over the past two days, attacks across the country have resulted in significant civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. Large cities far from the front lines, including Kyiv and Odesa, came under shelling. A missile strike damaged warehouses and transport of a non-governmental organization in Sumy region, and a drone strike disabled an evacuation bus of another local NGO in Donetsk region.
Strike on food supply vehicles in Sudan
Two trucks carrying food aid for starving families in South Kordofan state in Sudan were destroyed in an airstrike last weekend. This was reported today by the United Nations World Food Programme. The trucks were carrying 50 tons of food – cereals, split yellow peas, vegetable oil, and salt. These supplies would have been enough to provide life-saving assistance to 5,800 people for a month. The vehicles were clearly marked with UN agency logos and flags.
The humanitarian situation in the West Bank
Due to an acute funding shortage, the UN World Food Programme is forced to halve aid to families in the West Bank. This is happening against the backdrop of rapidly growing humanitarian needs: over the past two years, they have more than doubled. The large-scale increase in food insecurity is a direct consequence of escalating violence by settlers, Israeli military operations, as well as house demolitions, strict movement restrictions, and the mass displacement of residents. Currently, nearly one million people in the West Bank—more than a quarter of the entire population—are facing food shortages.
