Two trucks carrying food aid for starving families in South Kordofan state in Sudan were destroyed as a result of an airstrike last weekend. This was reported today by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
The SPLM firmly condemned the attack that occurred on August 30 near the city of Dilling.
The trucks carried 50 tons of food – cereals, split yellow peas, vegetable oil, and salt. These supplies would be enough to provide vital assistance to 5,800 people for a month.
The trucks were headed to Kadugli, where WFP provides support to nearly 58,000 people suffering from food insecurity. The vehicles were clearly marked with the logos and flags of the UN agency.
The attacks must stop
The WFP stated that this attack was yet another example of the difficult conditions under which humanitarian organizations have to operate in Sudan.
The UN has repeatedly called for an end to the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023.
As a result of the conflict last year, 30 million people became in need of humanitarian aid.
Since January, the WFP has recorded eight airstrikes that damaged its facilities and disrupted humanitarian operations.
“Attacks on humanitarian workers and the undermining of humanitarian operations are unacceptable and must stop,” said the WFP, calling on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and to ensure the protection of civilians, humanitarian workers, and humanitarian facilities.
