Guiyang, September 2 /Xinhua/ — Currently, a new wave of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformations is gaining momentum, and global technological innovations in artificial intelligence have entered an unprecedentedly dynamic period. The recently concluded China International Big Data Industry Expo 2026 in Guiyang City /Guizhou Province, Southwest China/ became a convenient window to explore the key development trends of digital China.

As an important industry event in the digital field during the first year of implementing the 15th Five-Year Plan, this EXPO took place under the motto “Tokens – the new way to unlock the value of data elements.” It featured participation from 372 Chinese and international companies, and over 16,000 guests registered.

As part of EXPO, advanced developments were presented, including clusters of intelligent computing and coordination of computing power with energy supply, and the results of the implementation of the infrastructure project “Eastern Data, Western Computing” were visually demonstrated.

According to the China Data Industry Development Report 2026, published during the EXPO, the growing demand for AI has brought the construction of computing power into a stage of rapid expansion. As of the end of June 2026, the total scalability of intelligent computing in eight national computing hubs in China reached 2.14 million PFLOPS /FP16/, which is 54.2% higher than the figure at the end of 2025 and accounts for nearly 90% of the national total.

Intelligent computing power refers to specialized computational capabilities optimized for AI tasks, primarily supporting areas such as training large models and AI logical inference.

In recent years, the widespread adoption of large models and various AI applications has caused an explosive growth in demand for intelligent computing power. China has incorporated a unified national computing power network into the modern “six-network” infrastructure system as one of the key projects of the 15th Five-Year Plan. Its main goal is to create an integrated nationwide computing network for unified dispatching and shared use of computing resources.

According to statistical data, by the end of 2025, China had built 145 backbone fiber optic lines around eight major computing nodes, ensuring their interconnection, and the network data transmission delay from all provinces of the country to these eight computing nodes was reduced to less than 20 milliseconds.

“Today, AI development has a distinctly data-driven nature. We promote the creation and application of high-quality datasets where the AI industry is developing,” said Liu Lehong, head of the National Data Administration of China. According to him, by August 2026, more than 126 thousand high-quality datasets with a total volume of over 1,815 PB had been created in the country, which is 89% more compared to the figure in March 2026.

In the future, China will accelerate the formation of a unified national data market, improve the accountability system for the development and use of public data resources, and create a sustainable positive cycle between scenarios, data, models, and applications, he added.

According to the aforementioned report, by the end of 2025, there were 482,000 data-related enterprises in China, increasing by 17.9 percent year-on-year. Among them, companies engaged in large models, simulation-synthetic data, and data services for embodied intelligence show high activity in financing.

Hu Jianbo, director of the National Institute for Data Development, believes that in the long term, as AI’s demand for data grows, the scale of China’s data industry is expected to maintain relatively high growth rates, and synergy within the industry will also continue to increase.
