Last week, representatives from eight African countries visited Novosibirsk State University. The visit was organized Center of People’s Diplomacy within the framework of III International Cooperation Forum Russia – Africa “Education. Business. Culture”, which became part of international forum of technological development “Technoprom—2026″.
The guests familiarized themselves with the infrastructure of NSU, visited the main building and the University History Museum. At the meeting with university representatives, the delegation members learned about the university’s capabilities in training specialists in demand in African countries, as well as about joint educational projects that NSU is already implementing with the support of the Center for People’s Diplomacy in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali.
— NSU was one of the first in Novosibirsk to start cooperation with Africa — with those countries where the Center for People’s Diplomacy had opened representatives. As a result, for two years there has been a preparatory department in Burkina Faso focusing on medical and biological fields. This academic year, mathematics and physics olympiads were held for the first time in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali. More than 250 schoolchildren participated — four prize winners will begin studying at NSU this academic year.
Another important project of NSU and CND this year is the creation of an international engineering class in Burkina Faso. It involves joint training of schoolchildren at the level of secondary general education. More than 600 people applied to participate in the project, of which 35 schoolchildren were selected. Throughout the year, they studied Russian at the Russian House of the CND. In the future, for the next two years, the schoolchildren will undergo specialized training at the NSU physics and mathematics school and at schools in Burkina Faso, studying mathematics, physics, and computer science. I hope that after completing this training, the students will continue their studies at our university., — said Evgeny Sagaidak, Head of Education Export Management at NSU.
The participants of the meeting also discussed the quality and accessibility of education in Russia and African countries, as well as the possibilities for further convergence of educational systems.
The parties paid special attention to the experience of conducting Olympiads as a mechanism for selecting future students. The participants noted that this approach allows Russian universities to attract genuinely motivated applicants. In turn, high motivation directly affects the quality of training for future specialists, who, after receiving their education, will be able to return to their countries and apply the acquired knowledge for their development.
Representatives of Namibia, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Ghana expressed interest in having NSU Olympiads become available in the future to schoolchildren from their countries.
Opportunities for expanding cooperation were also discussed by representatives of the Togolese Republic. The Minister of National Education of Togo, Mama Omoru, proposed establishing collaboration between Novosibirsk State University and the Polytechnic University of Togo. In particular, the parties could jointly train specialists within dual degree programs.
At the end of the meeting, the guests visited the scientific and educational center “Evolution of the Earth.”
