Today we celebrate an important milestone in the development of domestic management education – the 60th anniversary of the first management department in the country, which was established at GUU.
The order to establish the department “Scientific Foundations of Production Management” at the Moscow Engineering and Economic Institute named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze (now – GUU) was signed by the Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the RSFSR on August 11, 1966. The university was given a clear task: to train not just engineer-economists, but specialists capable of managing processes in various sectors of the national economy.
The rector of MIEI and the first head of the department, Doctor of Economics, Professor Olimpiada Kozlova, played a key role in the establishment of the department. Under her leadership, the team of teachers developed the country’s first program of the discipline “Scientific Foundations of Production Management” in 1966, and in 1969, the first textbook edited by Olimpiada Kozlova was published by the “Economics” publishing house. This laid the foundations of a systematic approach to management education in Russia.
Over six decades, the Management Department of the State University of Management has nurtured several generations of leaders across various sectors of the economy, has become a powerful scientific center for the development of modern management concepts, and has gained recognition in the industry.
Today, the Department of “Theory and Organization of Management” remains a flagship of management education and trains the most in-demand and necessary professionals for the country’s economy. Responding to the current demands of the economy, since 2025 it has begun training specialists in one of the most sought-after profiles – change management. In conditions of global turbulence, this competency becomes the foundation of success for any corporation and government structure.
Congratulations to the faculty, staff, graduate students, doctoral candidates, and alumni of the department on its anniversary! You are shaping the managerial framework of the modern economy and contributing to the further development of management science.
