UN Chief at the SCO Summit
The world is rapidly moving towards multipolarity, and this very process could become the foundation for a more just system of global governance and international relations. This was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The UN chief emphasized that the existing global architecture – including the United Nations itself – requires reform. Representation and influence of developing countries in international institutions need to be expanded, Guterres said.
Attack on Kyiv
For the sixth consecutive night, Kyiv has been subjected to missile strikes and drone attacks by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Matthias Schmale said on Tuesday. According to available data, at least 12 civilians have died in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, and another 18 have been injured. The strikes targeted railway infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of railway workers.
Special Coordinator in Gaza
Acting UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov today began a three-day visit to the Gaza Strip. In Gaza City, he visited a field hospital, and earlier, in Khan Yunis, he visited an ad hoc camp for displaced persons that faces serious flooding risks with the onset of the rainy season. Alakbarov stated that preparing for this season is an urgent task and called on donors to increase aid volumes and Israeli authorities to ease restrictions hindering humanitarian operations.
Consequences of the floods in Nepal
Rescue operations continue in Nepal after devastating floods. The death toll has exceeded one thousand people, and about 4,000 are reported missing. According to Chinese authorities, 16 people have died in that country, and 546 still remain missing. One of the priority tasks is restoring access to medical services, WHO notes. Six medical facilities were damaged or destroyed, and two more remain inaccessible.
