The action unfolds in 19th-century Moscow. At the center of the plot is an impoverished merchant family: a widow and her daughter, who must choose between two suitors. One is young and poor, the other wealthy but accustomed to demanding unquestioning respect from those around him.
The heroes have different attitudes towards wealth, love, and the ability to control their own destiny. Through their characters and actions, the story of people ready to defend their own dignity and resist others’ arbitrariness is revealed.
