The capital’s metro system has taken first place among underground transport systems in Europe and America in terms of speed and scale of rolling stock renewal. Over the past 10 years, more than 5,000 modern cars have been put into operation and delivered, resulting in the average age of trains in the metro decreasing from more than 20 to 11.7 years.
If in 2010 the share of new generation trains was about 13%, today this figure has reached 80%. According to the development plans of the capital’s transport system, by 2030 the share of modern cars in the metro will exceed 90%.
As of today, the fleet renewal program has been fully completed on the key lines of the capital’s metro:
- Filevskaya (Line 4)
- Ring Line (Line 5)
- Kalužsko-Rижskaya (Line 6)
- Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya (Line 7)
- Big Circle Line (Line 11)
- Nekrasovskaya (Line 15)
- Troitskaya (Line 16)
Currently, active deliveries continue to the Zamoskvoretskaya metro line, where the share of modern-generation trains has already exceeded 80%.
The capital’s metro modernization program has a significant impact on the economy of the entire country. Moscow acts as a key driver of the development of domestic transport engineering: industrial enterprises and high-tech production facilities from dozens of regions of Russia are involved in the manufacturing, assembly, and outfitting of new train sets.
“We continue the large-scale program of rolling stock renewal in accordance with the task set by the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin. The Moscow metro is the leader in train renewal among cities in Europe and America. Over the past 10 years, the Moscow metro has received more than 5,000 new cars. During 2026-2027, the delivery of another 700 cars of the most modern and technologically advanced series ‘Moscow-2026’ is expected,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Transport Affairs.Maxim Liksutov.
