On August 30, a memorial plaque will be unveiled in the capital in honor of Igor Kvasha — one of the founders of the Moscow theater “Sovremennik”, under the jurisdiction of the city Department of Culture.
The ceremony will take place at the house on Glinishchevsky Lane, where the artist lived for 55 years. In this way, Igor Kvasha’s personal fate will become inextricably linked with the history of the theater to which he devoted most of his life.
Igor Kvasha was one of the founders of the Sovremennik Theatre and remained its actor from the early years of the theatre’s existence until 2012. Here he played more than 50 roles and directed five productions. For decades, Igor Kvasha participated in the daily work of the theatre, thanks to which Sovremennik maintains its individuality and fidelity to its principles.
It is symbolic that the memorial plaque to Igor Kvashe is topped with the image of the very “Sovremennik”. It depicts the theater building on Chistoprudny Boulevard and its recognizable neoclassical colonnade. On its steps is a group of young actors, graduates of the Moscow Art Theatre School-Studio (MHAT), future founders of “Sovremennik.” The sculptural part of the memorial plaque was created by Alexander Sviyazov, and the architect was Svetlana Volkova.
The unveiling of the plaque for Igor Kvashe became a logical continuation of the initiative of the anniversary season of “Sovremennik,” which set out to immortalize the memory of its founders — those who in 1956 created the Studio of Young Actors, which later became a legendary theater. Earlier, a commemorative plaque for Oleg Tabakov appeared on the facade of the building on Chaplygin Street, where the historical stage of the Oleg Tabakov Theater is now located.
During the year, memorial plaques will be installed in honor of Galina Volchek, Lilia Tolmacheva, Yevgeny Yevstigneev, and Viktor Sergachev. And a memorial plaque to Oleg Efremov has already been installed on Tverskaya Street — on the facade of the house where he lived.
