The traditional August pedagogical council this year took place at the Moscow Palace of Pioneers on Vorobyovy Gory. The Mayor of Moscow participated in it Sergey Sobyanin and the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov.
Sergey Kravtsov noted that the Moscow education system is one of the best in the world, which many countries strive to emulate. It also serves as an example for other regions of Russia. In the new academic year, about 1.6 million children will enter Moscow kindergartens, schools, and colleges. They will be greeted by more than 110 thousand teachers.
Victories at Olympiads and high exam results
The quality of metropolitan education is confirmed by the victories of city schoolchildren in olympiads and the results of the Unified State Exam (USE) and the Basic State Exam (BSE). Nearly half of all medals at all-Russian olympiads are won by Moscow schoolchildren, and two-thirds of the awards at international subject competitions also go to Muscovites. The overall average USE score in Moscow is already eight points higher than the national average.
“This year, the number of students scoring 100, 200, 300, and 400 points has increased significantly, and there is even a girl who scored 500 points. I believe this is now the benchmark we have overcome, and there will be other examples of such successful studies,” noted Sergey Sobyanin.
Based on the results of the 2025/2026 academic year, the Mayor of Moscow awarded grants to 20 of the best capital city schools and three colleges for their contribution to quality education. Among the laureates is Sergey Graskin, director of School No. 1580.
“Attention to the Moscow education system is an investment in the future. The entire corps of city principals, teachers, and college instructors, both in the upcoming school year and beyond, will do everything so that our great country, our capital, continue to show high results, and we will do everything for the benefit of our Fatherland,” said Sergey Graskin.
This year, more than half of high school students will be studying pre-professional programs. Educational verticals are also being developed. Starting this academic year, a new physics and mathematics vertical will be opened for seventh to ninth grades.
“Moscow Electronic School”
Today, many regions, using Moscow’s experience not only in education but also in other areas, are actively developing.
“Many regions have already switched to the ‘Moscow Electronic School,’ and are very grateful. Indeed, it helps to solve issues with reporting and unnecessary routine tasks, which often burden teachers, allowing more time to be devoted to students. This enables saving resources and improving the quality of education,” noted Sergey Kravtsov.
Secondary vocational education
A very important area that Moscow is developing is secondary vocational education. Almost half of the students enroll in colleges after the ninth grade.
The popularity of secondary vocational education is growing, so Moscow is increasing the number of budget-funded places while simultaneously improving the quality of training.
“We try to take into account the wishes of the students regarding the choice of their future profession — 85 percent of those enrolled in the summer were admitted to the specialty they indicated first in their priorities. At the same time, schoolchildren choose professions consciously and in advance. The city career guidance program, which 93 percent of those enrolled in colleges completed, helps with this. This year, nearly 10,000 students from other regions enrolled in the capital’s colleges.
The infrastructure of colleges is also being rebuilt. About 1,500 workshops and laboratories have already been modernized. In 2026 and 2027, another 600 rooms will be re-equipped. In total, about 2,050 laboratories and workshops will be updated.
There are also four flagship practical training sites operating for students.

Infrastructure development and digitalization
In order for children’s potential to be realized as fully as possible, all necessary conditions are constantly being created. The comprehensive school infrastructure development program makes a significant contribution.
This year, 29 schools will open for 23,000 children and 31 kindergartens for nine thousand toddlers. The city has started designing and constructing 11 schools of the future – new educational spaces that will become a model for the entire country. Seven innovative colleges will also appear.
“We all understand that it is impossible to rebuild all schools or build new ones. The majority of them were still built decades ago. We agreed, we promised you that we would begin a major reconstruction of the existing old buildings. And this year, on September 1st alone, 100 school buildings will be opened simultaneously. This is a huge amount of work,” remarked the Mayor of Moscow.
Engineering systems and lighting are being renovated in the buildings, furniture is being updated. In addition, specialized classrooms, laboratories, and common areas are being equipped with the necessary equipment.
Today, 85 more schools are under reconstruction. The program will continue until all schools in the capital meet the most modern requirements. According to Sergey Sobyanin, the city’s task is to provide absolutely all teachers and students with comfortable conditions.
“We have achieved great success in the digitalization of education. Thus, last academic year, three artificial intelligence-based tools operated in the ‘MESH’: ‘Digital Teacher,’ ‘Tutor AI’ from Yandex, and an AI assistant for teachers. Special attention in Moscow is paid to the development of the teaching staff potential. In particular, admission to specialties directly related to pedagogical education has been increased by almost one and a half times. Today, 65 percent of budget-funded places are targeted admissions. “These are the students who will receive pedagogical education. They already understand that they are guaranteed to get this job in Moscow schools, which is very important,” emphasized Sergey Sobyanin.
Currently, a concept for the new material base of the pedagogical university is being developed so that it will have not only quality content but also modern technical equipment.
