A new academic year has begun at the State University of Management, starting immediately with new acquaintances. The third group of students from Samara University has arrived at SUM, who will spend the entire academic year here, become part of university life, and experience one of the main principles of education at SUM — working not only with theory but also with real projects.
At their home university, the students study in the “Management” program, and in Moscow they will join the students of “Business Informatics” at GUU. The education takes place within the framework of a double degree program.
The first day at the new university was dedicated to getting acquainted. Students were told how the studies would be organized, what opportunities Moscow offers, why Thursday at GUU is a special day, and how to gain experience working on real company projects even during their studies.
The main thing is not to lose focus on studying
The first to greet the students was Dmitry Bryukhanov, Vice-Rector of GUU. He noted one of the features of the university’s educational model — the significant role of project work.
Therefore, Thursday at the State University of Management is not an extra day off at all, but a project day that students devote to teamwork, consultations with experts, and the development of their own projects.
At the same time, there will be plenty of opportunities outside the classroom: internships, educational programs, university events, and other projects. Students from Samara will be able to use the GUE resources on par with other students.
But Dmitry Bryukhanov suggested setting priorities right away, with studies taking precedence above all else.
“In our country, there are a huge number of opportunities for young people; the rest depends on you“, — emphasized the vice-rector.
First and foremost — safety
Most of the first day was dedicated to practical matters of life in the new city and university.
The lead specialist of the anti-terrorism security department, Petr Lebedinsky, explained how to act in suspicious situations and attempts of fraud. The main rule is simple: do not face the problem alone. If a student encounters fraudsters or feels unsafe, they can always turn to the university staff for help.
Head of the Civil Defense Department Konstantin Lipinsky gave a detailed explanation of fire safety and evacuation rules. Students were reminded where to find evacuation plans, why it is important to check the functionality of chargers, and to pay close attention to the quality of extension cords and other electrical equipment.
From Samara to the project teams of GUU
The main educational venue for the students will be the Institute of Information Systems at the State University of Management. Its director, Olga Pisareva, along with her deputy Ruslan Skryp, introduced the students to how their academic year will proceed.
For the State University of Management, this is not the first experience working with students from Samara University. Olga Pisareva spoke about the achievements of previous cohorts: program participants won prizes in project-based learning, prepared scientific publications together with representatives of the State University of Management, completed internships, and represented their universities at major events in other regions of the country.
Now these opportunities are also available for the new cohort. In the second semester, the students will have practical training, but for now the main task is to engage in the learning process and get used to its rhythm.
Why Thursdays are never free at GUU
One of the features that students will get especially familiar with is project-based learning. Anastasia Lobacheva, Director of the Project Office of the Department of Acceleration Programs and Project-Based Learning, explained how it is organized.
Project activities occupy a significant part of the educational process at GSOM. Students form teams and work on selected topics, including tasks proposed by the university’s partners.
A separate project day is allocated for such work — Thursday. On this day, consultations, meetings, lectures, and events with invited experts take place. Moreover, you can consult not only with teachers from your own field: the interdisciplinary approach allows you to receive consultations from specialists in different areas and institutes.
This system is also supported by digital infrastructure. On special platforms, students create a profile of their project, record its goals, audience, and necessary resources, and also select events and consultations from the calendar.
And if the project grows into a real startup, it can even be used as the basis for a final qualifying thesis and to participate in the all-Russian competition “Startup as a Diploma.”
Students of GUU already have successful experience participating in it, including first place in Russia.
Internship as a career start
Another important part of the upcoming year is getting acquainted with employers. Alla Zhukova, Director of the Career and Practical Training Center, told students about internships, practical training, and career opportunities at GUU.
The university organizes job fairs, meetings, and workshops with companies where you can speak directly with business representatives, learn employer requirements, and find a place for future internships or traineeships.
In the second semester, students will have a separate meeting dedicated to practice. Meanwhile, they are encouraged not to limit themselves to just the class schedule, but to participate in university events and make the most of the year in Moscow.
After the introductory meeting, the new group went on a tour of the State University of Management.
Ahead of the students from Samara is a whole academic year with lectures and seminars, project Thursdays, internships, new teams, and the opportunity to test themselves in a completely new university environment.
