From August 28 to 30, the Russian Geographical Society festival dedicated to the ethnocultural diversity of the peoples of Russia will be held at VDNH. On one site, the traditions of the peoples of the Russian North and the Caucasus, the nomadic heritage of Siberia, and the Finno-Ugric customs of the Volga region will be presented.
Visitors will be able to take a real journey across the country in one day and get to know its diversity through music, art, gastronomy, and events in an interactive format. The program includes performances by folk groups and artists, films about travel across Russia in a VR cinema, and workshops on decorative and applied arts.
Creative groups from different parts of the country will introduce their native traditions — from Dagestani lezginka to playing the khomys, an instrument typical for Khakassia. The festival will also feature film screenings and exhibitions dedicated to the peoples of Russia, VR cinemas, and for those who want to observe diverse wildlife, interactive zones with camera traps from nature reserves will be prepared. Handicraft enthusiasts will be able to gain new knowledge in master classes on decorative and applied arts. Participants will create their own original items in the styles of Gzhel, Zhostovo, or Palekh painting.
In addition, the Russian Geographical Society will hold a quiz at the festival where you can test your erudition.
The gastronomic zone will feature the quintessence of various cuisines of the peoples of Russia. Regional brands will delight with traditional culinary dishes—from Cossack kurnik to Caucasian shashlik. Visitors will be revealed the secrets of making chak-chak, choosing good fish, as well as learning about the particularities of Siberian dumplings and much more. Masterclasses, tasting sessions, quizzes, and lotteries—all of these will help to understand the gastronomic traditions of different corners of the country.
The festival will feature an awards ceremony for the winners and prize-winners of the “Best Mentor on the Hike” contest, whose final took place in the Urals in July.
The Festival of the Russian Geographical Society was held for the first time in 2014, and during its existence the project has resonated in the hearts of over 1.5 million people from many regions of Russia and foreign countries.
