A mudslide that occurred on the Nepalese side struck the Gyirong border crossing in the eponymous county of the Shigatse prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region on Wednesday morning. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, three people have died, 558 are missing, and two local residents have been rescued, local authorities reported.
As of 14:28 on Thursday, another group of rescuers, consisting of 111 specialists from the Chinese search and rescue team, arrived in Gyirong County and will proceed to the Gyirong checkpoint to conduct rescue operations.
Early Thursday morning, an advance team of eight people from China Anneng corporation – a state engineering and rescue enterprise – arrived in Gyirong County with communication and detection equipment to collect important data and provide support in clearing the blockage in the river’s upper reaches, which is a top priority.
According to the rescuers working at the scene, only after the hazard related to the landslide is eliminated can the safety of the sediment clearance work on a section about 3 km long in the upper reaches of the river, located upstream from the border crossing, be ensured.
Hundreds more rescuers are rushing to the disaster zone, bringing equipment and materials for search operations, rescue missions, debris clearance, communications, and logistical support. -0-
