House-Museum Marina Tsvetaeva, subordinate to the capital Department of Culture, in Borisoglebsky Lane preserves the memory not only of the great poet but also of the Silver Age. Here Tsvetaeva gave birth to her daughter, witnessed the revolution and the Civil War, wrote 10 poetry books, and created her first plays and essays.
The history of the house-museum is inseparable from the drama of its inhabitants. Before the revolution, it enchanted with its decor, antique items, a huge library, furry rugs on the floor, the fireplace’s fire, and an atmosphere of inspiration. After long destruction, it was possible to recreate the unique layout of Tsvetaeva’s apartment on the second floor. The pre-revolutionary interiors were restored based on photographs and archival sources. The most valuable exhibits are the mirror, beads, coffee cup, and her portrait that belonged to Marina Tsvetaeva.
On August 28, an exhibition will open in the house-museum “Places of My Soul”, dedicated to the significant places for Marina Tsvetaeva on the map of Russia and other European countries. Her favorite places, which she wrote about in her diary, do not include any capital or large city, although Tsvetaeva was born and raised in Moscow, lived in Prague and Paris, and visited St. Petersburg, Berlin, London, and Brussels. No historically rich cities left an impression on her heart like quiet spots of nature and moments of rural life.
Tarusa is a small town in the Kaluga province, the place of Marinina’s childhood holidays. Langackern is a village in the German Black Forest where one of the happy family events took place. Koktebel is a corner in eastern Crimea, graced by the genius of the artist and poet Maximilian Voloshin. In his house, Tsvetaeva met her future husband Sergei Efron. Mokropsy and Vshenory are Czech villages near Prague: the first became the place of the family’s post-war reunion, and the second – the birth of their son Georgiy.
These geographical points form a square, like the four walls of Tsvetaeva’s soul house or the four cardinal directions in her world. Notably, two places are connected with childhood, two with youth and early adulthood, two are in Russia, and two are in other countries.
Guests will journey along the route charted by Marina Tsvetaeva herself. Visitors will learn what she saw and experienced, who she met and loved in these places, what shaped her as a person, enriched her soul, and gave her inspiration.
The exhibition “Places of Her Soul” will run until February 28, 2027.

This black staircase is mentioned in the poem from the cycle “Komedyant.”
