When constructing new residential complexes in Moscow, the approach to calculating the area for landscaping and improvement will be changed. This will allow the creation of more comfortable courtyards with places for relaxation, walks, and necessary infrastructure. The corresponding changes will be made to the urban planning design standards — a set of mandatory rules that determine the composition and volume of infrastructure for new residential developments.
“After updating, the calculation rules for new residential construction projects will clearly regulate the ratio of areas: how much space in the courtyard of the constructed complex should be allocated directly to green zones, and how much to children’s playgrounds, adult recreation areas, and road-path networks. Each resident of future new buildings will be allocated at least five square meters of greened territory, of which 3.5 or more square meters will be dedicated to greenery and at least 1.5 to landscaping of the area, including all the necessary infrastructure. This will allow the creation of a higher quality, safer, and modern requirement-compliant environment. Changing the approach to calculating green areas when designing new buildings is an important step that contributes to improving the quality of life for city residents,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Planning Policy and Construction.
An adequate amount of greenery and well-maintained areas affects not only the appearance of residential developments but also the everyday comfort of city residents. A new approach to design will allow these components to be considered comprehensively.
“The new mechanism for calculating the area for landscaping and beautification will make life more comfortable both in individual complexes and throughout the metropolis, contributing to the development of the urban environment. We take into account the real needs of residents, creating conditions for relaxation and walks, where different green spaces complement each other competently,” added the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the city’s Department of Urban Planning Policy.
Moscow is already a world leader in the share of green spaces among the largest metropolises, noted in the capital Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.
According to Yulia Urozhayeva, the head of the agency, 90 percent of Muscovites have parks and squares within walking distance. Trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants perform important ecosystem functions: they protect against noise and help maintain a comfortable temperature regime. The head of the department added that, according to experts’ estimates, during heat they can reduce the perceived temperature by 12 degrees and increase dust deposition by 40 percent. Compliance with landscaping regulations and the careful selection of plants considering their ecosystem functions make it possible to create favorable living conditions in the metropolis, making the city more environmentally friendly and aesthetically attractive
