Beijing, August 27 /Xinhua/ — Zhang Xiaogan, official spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, on Thursday called on the Philippines to tow away the ship that had illegally “run aground” in the Ren’ai Reef area and to cease all provocative actions in the South China Sea.
Zhang Xiaogan made this statement at a press conference in response to a request from the media to comment on the recent delivery of a batch of essential items to the Philippine ship BRP Sierra Madre /LT-57/.
According to reports, the Philippine side repeatedly tried to deliver construction materials under the pretext of replenishing supplies in order to reinforce the vessel with the aim of permanently securing it on the reef.
Ren’ai Reef is part of the Chinese Nansha archipelago, Zhang Xiaogan stated, noting that China and the Philippines have reached a temporary agreement on the delivery of humanitarian cargo or replenishment of essential supplies to resolve the situation in the Ren’ai Reef area.
China will not tolerate any attempts by the Philippines to deliver construction materials, build permanent facilities, or establish a permanent outpost on the reef, said Zhang Xiaogan, adding that China will take measures to prevent such actions in accordance with the law.
He noted that China resolutely defends its territorial sovereignty, maritime rights and interests, and firmly supports peace and stability in the South China Sea.
